Can't Access Net from Hot Spots

I can't access the net using my Gateway laptop at free wi-fi hotspots. I connect initially but only "local," but not on the Internet. If I wait a bit, I receive a message stating that the adapter is waiting for an ad hoc connection. I have a Realtek 8185 adapter. Thanks.

Re: Can't Access Net from Hot Spots

You need to configure the wireless for infrastructure mode.

Quote:
Advanced To configure advanced wireless settings that are independent of the wireless networks to which you are connecting, click Advanced. You can use these advanced settings to specify whether you want to connect only to infrastructure or ad hoc wireless networks, and whether you want to attempt to automatically connect to wireless networks that are not in your preferred list (by using the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks setting, which is disabled by default).

I don't seem to have the Wireless Network tab. See screen capture.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have the wireless network icon in the system tray?

Re: Can't Access Net from Hot Spots

I only have a small icon such which appears as two overlapping computers connected. When I mouse over it, it says currently connected (local only).

Re: Can't Access Net from Hot Spots

Post a screen shot of your network and sharing center.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
