[SOLVED] new pc not connecting to network
hi,
i just finished building my new pc and i am having trouble connecting to my network, at first i thought it might be cos dhcp is disabled i know it use to be so i set my ip address and dns servers up, and the PC will connect to the network but not give me internet or allow me to browse the network. if i tell my pc to look for dhcp nothing happens full stop or it will connect to the network but with a completely wrong ip and subnet mask, i cannot figure it out at all... pc specs are as follows core2 duo 2.66Ghz Asus p5n-3 sli 2 geforce 9600GT's 4Gb corsair xms 2 800mhz 500gb hdd dvd rw 700w psu Windows XP media center edition 2005 (no updates as of yet due to lack of internet) thanks for your time. dan |

Re: new pc not connecting to network
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: new pc not connecting to network
Yes it is under dhcp .
You get this IP because there is a network problem or no active dhcp and in this case Windows put a generic IP as 169.x.x.x. Have you got another PC connected on this network and how it's IP is configured ? Are your sure your network is Ok and do you know the network IP and mask of it ? We need to know how is configured your network ? Have you got a modem/router , which brand and model of this one ? If you have a modem/router and are able to go on from another PC check if dhcp is active ? In fact we need to have more information regarding the configuration of your network. Thanks Caiman2
