[SOLVED] DI-524, XP SP2, Obtaining Auto Private IP Address, not seeing network
Hi there. I stumbled upon this nifty forum through a link from google to: http://www.techsupportforum.com/networking-forum/cabling-network-cards/86473-automatic-private-ip.html
I have two wireless and two wired computers connected to my D-link DI-524 router. All of these are fine except one wired computer running an NForce4 network adapter. This computer has had connection problems from the start, disconnecting frequently, etc. All of a sudden, it would not connect to the network even though the Local Area Connection said connected. It gave itself a 192.254xxx auto address instead, and would not obtain its normal IP address no matter what I tried. I've done all that has been said in the above URL short of posting my results here (as this is my first post). Would anyone have any other ideas as to what I could do? I'm repairing my windows installation as I type and if it doesn't work, I'm again without a clue as to what the problem is. One thing I worry about is whether or not my ISP has disabled just that computer from accessing the internet, but I doubt that's the case as the other computers are fine, and it seems to be a local problem... Thanks in advance for any help! Jason |

Re: DI-524, XP SP2, Obtaining Auto Private IP Address, not seeing network
Try changing the port on the router and the cable you're using. Next, try the following repair.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine. If this fails, I'd be looking at possibly replacing the NIC. I'd also like to see this. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thank you for the reply john :)
I ended up trying two different ethernet cards and then a different cable. Turns out the old cable was the problem. Everything's dandy now. ![]() |
