Cannot Connect Wirelessly on a ThinkPad T42

My ThinkPad T42 with Windows XP Professional SP2 cannot connect wirelessly. I can enable the card, view available networks, and attempt to connect. However, it cannot acquire a network address on any wireless network (home, college, Starbucks, hotels, etc.) most of the time. When it does connect, I get the “Limited to no connectivity” popup, leading me to believe that the problem is on my end. I have updated my drivers, uninstalled/reinstalled the network card, and performed release/renew using ipconfig in the cmd prompt. Whenever this occurs in cmd, it says that there is an hardware error.

I have already checked out my TCP/IP settings. Everything’s ok there. I used Lenonvo’s proprietary PC Doctor program to run a diagnostic test. It came back saying that my system failed a test of pcdrnetwork module, because it could not communicate with the remote host. (I have no clue what this means.) Finally, I can connect using a LAN, but I always have to reboot my system before I am able to use the connection. Note, all of these issues occurred after a system reformat, so things are relatively clean.

I have an Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile Networking Card and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Wireless Card.

Thanks for your time. I hope to hear from you soon.

Have you downloaded the latest drivers for that Intel 2200BG Wireless card? It's infamous for problems with older drivers.

Re: Cannot Connect Wirelessly on a ThinkPad T42

Do you use the Intel wireless client, or Windows WZC? Try the one you're not using, making sure the other one is disabled.

I have tried both, to no avail. Could this be a hardware problem? If so, how should I go about diagnosing it? Thanks.

Re: Cannot Connect Wirelessly on a ThinkPad T42

Let's try a reset of the stack, just to cover all bases.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot Connect Wirelessly on a ThinkPad T42

Actually, problem not completely solved. After I run the cmd steps, the wireless connection works immediately upon restart, but after a couple of hours of use, my original problems pop up again. They can only be solved by rerunning the cmd steps and restarting. Any thoughts?

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot Connect Wirelessly on a ThinkPad T42

You obviously have something that is corrupting the WINSOCK. This is probably some sort of malware.

Please post a HijackThis 2.00.2 Log here.
