Internet doesn't work in basement.

I have an 8 Port Switch in the basement (kind of like a router, except different). It is being detected by the router, and the 2 green dots on it (the one for my dad's PC, and the switch) are flashing (the one for the switch is even flashing more often). However, my Xbox and the PC aren't connecting to the LAN. Is there any reason why? I have tried disconnecting the A/V power for up to 5 minutes, and that hasn't worked. I also did a full reset of my router.

What type of router and switch?

What type of cable are you using? (ie. crossover or straight through)
