Can Connect To Network...Unable to Use Internet

Hiya,
I'm new to this forum, so I'm probably going to come out as really dumb. I'm getting back into computers for the first time since my pentium I and windows 95 a couple years back. Anywho, to my problem:

I just moved in with my buddy, and he has the internet {im using his computer right now}, but I can't seem to connect through my laptop. I've tried googling the problem, and ipconfig-ing it, and it seems my default gateway isn't coming up. I seem to be able to send information, but as of now unable to recieve it.

I don't know what's wrong, and I'm wondering if it was ruined. My laptop was stolen a few weeks back, and i just got it from the cops today.

If anyone can help, I'll owe you big time.

Thanks,
BDKL

Re: Can Connect To Network...Unable to Use Internet

How about telling us something about the laptop? What version and patch level of Windows do you run?

If this is XP-SP2, try this:

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Re: Can Connect To Network...Unable to Use Internet

Hi ,

Make sure the wireless network that u r connecting to, is it a secured network or a unsecure network... if it is a secured network get the correct network key and then connect to the networrk..then u will be able to connect

U hav mentioned tht when u type ipconfig there is no default gateway--tht shows its a automatic private address...169.x.x.x...(if this the ip address then the wireless signal tht u r connecting to is defnetly a secured network)

try typing the correct network key--u will be able to go online
