Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

Hello, I've got a laptop with XP Pro and i've had next to no trouble with it until now. I've been connecting to a wireless network in my house and one day last week I stoped being able to get onto the internet. Everything shows connected but when I look at the status I can see packets being sent but nothing much coming in (never gets above 12). I've tried uninstalling my network card and reinstalling, doesn't help at all. Nothing show's a problem either.

I also connect to the internet via blue tooth and my cell phone while traveling. Same story with this, I can connect but can't get any place on the internet. Show's no packets being received, only sent.

Can someone please help me! I was going to post a HiJackThis log but thought maybe someone in here could help first.

Thank you for your time!

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

Can you tell us the make/model of the wireless router, the wireless adapter and/or laptop make/model, and the patch level of XP? Can you connect with a cable connection to the router, or is all of the networking malfunctioning?

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

OK, you aren't actually connected to anything, at least XP doesn't think you are. Since it says "Media Disconnected", I'm thinking you might try a different cable, and a different port on the router first. If that fails, try this stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

You should run the IPCONFIG when you're all connected and would expect it to function. Obviously, the diagnostic info is pretty useless if the wire is on the floor.

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

Let's try some tests:

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

PING 192.168.1.1

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

Let us know the results of each of these tests.

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

OK, you have a DNS resolution issue, you can ping Yahoo by IP address, but not by name. Did you run that WINSOCK repair I posted?

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

Start, Run, CMD.

IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

ARP -d *

Reboot and test. If that doesn't do anything, check if the following services are running.

Workstation, DHCP Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

I flushed and rebooted, still can't ping yahoo.com

I checked Windows Task Manager and I don't see any of those programs. Should I be looking someplace else?

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

Let's try something odd.

In the TCP/IP properties of your network connection, override the DNS server address and use 192.168.1.1 as a manual override. Leave the IP address on automatic. See if that helps.

Re: Help! Connected but doesn't do anything!

I made the change and still unable to ping yahoo.com

I was checking around and under adcanced TCP/IP settings I see the DHCP Enabled that you were talking about. Also under the "wireless network connection properties", General tab shows - Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, QoS Packet Scheduler, Microsoft TCP/IP version 6, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). All of these are checked. I went under the Internet Protocol to change the IP address like you said.

This is getting frustrating! Darn computer.

Do you have another computer running on the same router? If so, please let me see the IPCONFIG from that one.

Information from a different site is useless. I need to see the IPCONFIG from a working computer on the SAME network.
