Connection speed
I have qwest msn dsl and i wanted to know if the cambling between the wall has anything to do with speed because mine is not going at the speed it is supposed to to give you perspective my friend that live next door has the same internet but he has a download speed of 160kbs while mine is only 30kbs can the cabling have anyeffect on speed as i have the phoneline routed through 30 feet of standered phone cable only 2 prongs not the 4 pronged that was provided with the modem then it is split off to a phone line and the other one leads to the modem
so my question is if i buy the 4 pin cable instead of keeping the 2 pin will this speed up my internet?

It won't make a difference if it is 2 pin or 4 pin, only the center 2 pins will be used. The cabling can cause the speed to be slow, especially if there is a lot of interference or a bad cable. If you connect a phone to the line and there is a lot of static, then yes the speed will likely be low as the static will be interfering with the communication.
Also did you get these speeds from a speed test? If not I would try testing the speed at one of these locations ... http://speedtest.net/ http://www.dslreports.com/stest |

It can be a BIG issue. DSL/ADSL is very picky about the interior wiring.
Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand. This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.ing issues.

How are you extending it using the modem? If it actually uses the modem then yes the speeds will be dependent on the slowest part most likley the modem. If you are using it as a repeater or connector then no it won't have a major effect on it (This is similar to if you plugged the phone line into a surge protector). Do a speed test using one of the links I posted above, that way we can get an accurate measure of your internet speed.
