LAN on board won't allow NIC card in PCI??
Have HP m7490n. Lightning killed ethernet port which turned out to be in motherboard. Have disabled it and tried to install two different NIC cards in PCI slot: Netgear FA311v2 and then Linksys 10\100 EtherFast. Both times got Red X - card not connected and no green light. Finally on Linksys after changing cable got green light and Red X dissapeared but couldn't get internet (Comcast cable) because connection was weak? Reinstalled driver and computer locked. Had to deinstall everything and am now back to USB internet connection. I've wasted all day on this. I need to get back to ethernet so I can then install a Linksys wired router so I can also hook up a Laptop for work. Seems that the motherboard ethernet will not allow the separate NIC. Has anyone run into this? I am so irritated!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. MB

Did you disable the on-board broken NIC? I've never heard of this being an issue, and I've installed PCI NIC's in several machines with on-board NIC's, and they've worked together or singly.
