Ethernet Drivers not Being Recognized
Okay, I brought my computer (DELL Dimension 8250, stats in profile) in 2003. It had an ethernet port, but I never used it, ever until when I recently moved to college.
The college runs on an ethernet network for student residents, so I had to use their network. In this time, the hard drive has been wiped once, and (to my lack of knowledge), the ethernet files were erased, but since I didn't need them before, I never noticed. I bought an ethernet cable, and of course, it didn't work, well, I looked and found out I needed the drivers. "Oh okay", I think and go to a campus lab to get them. I get them from the DELL website, and install them, but it's still not recognizing them. What should I do? Thanks and God Bless! |

What are the exact indications that it doesn't recognize the drivers?

When I look at the device mangager, and look at the ethernet controller, it says that there are no drivers installed for the ethernet controller.
The ethernet controller icon appears as a yellow question inside of which (smaller) is a yellow exclamation point |

OK, you need to find the drivers on the Dell site and install them. You may need the chipset drivers as well.
I'm guessing when the computer was "wiped", you didn't install from the Dell recovery media, so you lost all the Dell specific drivers.

Yes, well see that's just the thing, I did install the DELL specific drivers, but for some reason or another it's not recognizing them.
I went to the DELL website and downloaded them, unpackaged them, and installed them. Yet, the problem persists. |

go to device manager.
1. click on the plus inside the sqare box next to network adapters(the one with the yellow exclamation mark) rt click on the line that drops down, that says something about the ethernet controller 2. a new box pops up with 5 choices update driver disable uninstall scan for hardware changes properties 3. click on "update driver"--a new window pops up with 2 choices install the software automatically install from a specific location click on the little circle in front of the second choice (install from a specific location)a little green dot should show up on choice #2 4.left click on the box at the bottom of the page that says NEXT---a new window pops up 5.left click on the little circle in front of the second choice (don't search.i will choose the driver to install)a little green dot should show up on choice #2 6.left click on the box at the bottom of the page that says NEXT---a new window pops up 7.you should be looking at a window that shows all the ethernet controllers that windows has detected . if your controller shows up,highlight it by left clicking on it---,then left click on the box at the bottom of the page that says NEXT if two show up,highlight the one you are going to plug into, by left clicking on it.---,then left click on the box at the bottom of the page that says NEXT if nothing is listed then your controller may be bad (you may have to install a new card) or you may havd a bad (corrupt) download from dell---try the "setup" from the expanded download from dell again. if all goes well you should end up at the DEVICE MANAGER window with all your devices showing up (NO YELLOW EXCLAMATION MARKS) if you do see any ---go through the whole process again-- download-->expand-->setup-->device manager-->etc. if you see your ethernet listed in device manager you are half way there---windows just doesn't know where to look for the driver files,or if windows can find them, they aren"t the correct ones for our device,or they are corrupt.there is million different things that can be the problem. |
