cnet onboard nic probs

a friend has lost the ability to get online...i went by and did some preliminary work to see what the prob is - reinstalled the driver, did a system rapair, checked bios to insure it hadnt been disabled, all checked out ok but no access...in 1 hour of banging away at it there had only been 29 packets sent and 19 rec'd. that tells me to look at the onboard nic - cnet pro200wl (provided by dell computer).i am having the isp run some tests on the line then i am seriously thinking of doing the following and need to have this idea "blessed". i want to figure out how to disconnect the on board device and install a real nic card in a pci slot...is this idea sound and where can i find additional info about the mechanics of such a venture> tkz for your help, aloha

The onboard nic is typically enabbled / disabled thru Bios.

Can you run ipconfig /all and post results?
