Transferring Windows XP from one pc to another

My son and I have the identical HP laptops with the same Windows XP Home edition operating system. His has crashed. It wont reboot or anything. We moved several months ago and have misplaced our Operating System Disks. Is there anyway I can make a disk from my PC or transfer from my laptop to his without having to purchase these disks over again?? Help!!!

Confused

Nope. No restore partition. I can't even get to command prompt or start in safe mode. When I select either one it just goes back to trying to restart and goes to a blue screen with an error message that reads:
UNMOUNTABLE _BOOT_VOLUME

STOP: 0x000000ED

Any suggestions??

as long as the machines are 100% identical, then yes, you can clone the contents over.

here's the only way i can see this done, because they are laptops.

if you have a desktop pc, you can get ahold of 2 of the 5$ adapters, and put your hard disk as the master, and his as the slave, and then use almost any hard disk transfer tool.
you can download this at western digital's site, and maxtor, they more or less all have them.

or, you can get one adapter, and then use the desktop pc in conjunction with some hard disk ghosting software. there should be some free ones...

i don't know though, since i have a copy of "drivesnapshot"
norton ghost works, powerquest drive image works.
hope that helps.

also, i am going to move you on into the correct section for this question.

I've done it both ways volt-schwibe has suggested using xxclone. With the two-drive adapter method, I just disconnected a cd-rom drive and installed both laptop drives as slaves in the desktop. The tough part was figuring out which way to install the adapter as they were not keyed and pin one seemed to be marked incorrectly on the adapters I used

If you use xxclone, make sure you check the three boxes in the advanced set-up tab
