EEK! Questionable files on my computer

I currently have numerous file running on my computer that i'm in question about. These include:
1. NOPDB.EXE
2. Isass.exe
and 3. SMagent.exe

Does anyone now what these files are for. If they are not part of windows what are they and should I file and delete them?

Second I'd like to now a bit more about HIGHJACKTHIS.
Is it what the programer claims and is it worth downloading?

Hi,

I've seen the ISASS.exe program before. I don't know what it does, but I assume it's legitamate.

Hijack this is a fairly reputable program. It will examine all your running tasks and analyze your system to look for various spyware programs.

Download and install Startup Mechanic. It's a free program that will be able to tell you what 99% of the startup programs are for. Just scan and go through the tabs to see what each file does.

FRom what Ive headrd it still has bugs and needs a lot more development work on it - I think they've released it for users to find the bugs for them.

Why not click the link provided by Caesar and read about it for yourself.

If you want help here - this is your best bet - as suggested by Fox :-

Download hijackthis from

http://tomcoyote.org/hjt

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

After the scan has finished the "scan" button will turn into a "save log" button

save the log file and paste it here

Do not delete anything yet, as most things hijackthis finds are harmless and needed.

Hmm, I prefer to stay away from HiJackThis:
"HijackThis does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites."
-Cnet

Startup Mechanic works fine. It's 100% spyware free. The bugs reside mostly in it's program information database, but I haven't had problems with it. I've been using it since the day it got pushed into Beta, and have had no problems with it, so i don't think you will either.

I ran mechanic and everything worked fine.
I also ran HiJackThis and saw a few questionable things in it.
The third thing i installed and ran today was AVG anti virus. It managed to pick up 3 viruses that norton didn't find.

Hi Guy!

It looks like the programs you have run have done most of the work (which is how it is supposed to be).

Actually, the 02 entry is just some housecleaning.

The two 016 entries are left-overs from some of the infections that the programs tried to cure.

Open a HJT log, check those three items to be fixed, then, with all explorer and browser windows closed, tell HJT to fix them.

Reboot.

Send us one more HJT log please, so that we can make sure everything was fixed.

The problem is that everything is moving so fast, it's hard for anyone to keep up with it. It's not like a new virus, trojan or variant is being found everyday; it's more like every hour.

Even we poor souls that read HJT logs for folks have a heck of a time keeping our research current.

I am posting my canned thing on security programs that are useful in fighting back. You can read about each of them at the sites.

jgvernonco’s
recommended
security
software

Zonealarm Firewall (free edition) Zone Labs:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conte...reeDownload.jsp

Free antivirus software

http://www.avast.com/i_idt_153.html

Spyware blocking programs (free):

Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard (the link will take you to the

Blaster page. The menu bar at the top will take you to the Guard page.

These two programs, written by the same developer, work hand-in-hand to

protect you from invasions).

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Spyware Killers (free)!

Spybot Search & Destroy

http://download.com.com/3000-2144-1...&tag=button

Adaware
Ad-aware - Software - Lavasoft

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

I run both of these, as they occasionally find something that the other

did not.

Additionally, Microsoft has made some poor choices about default

settings in the OSs, resulting in multiple security weaknesses. Gibson

Research has a number of little programs that will help you close

security holes without having to edit your registry, wander My

Computer, etc., just to get secure. I highly recommend this resource.

Gibson Research Corporation Home Page

http://grc.com/default.htm

The secret to running these programs is to update at least weekly!

Update Adaware and Spybot before you run a scan every time. Don’t

forget to update Blaster and Guard when you are doing your maintenance.

Make sure the antivirus software us up-to-date. Put a note on your

computer reminding you to do it!

Stay safe! Enjoy the WWW!

Hijackthis and Startup Mechanic are totally different programs doing totally different jobs

Hijackthis is an excellent program - if used properly

Startup Mechanic may work ok on some computers - but not all

Your log does look pretty clean now - you can fix these 2 resource hogs, which are not required :-

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

And for spyware/addware/foistware/malware detection and removal - you can't beat this program - try it and I'll bet it finds things Startup Mechanic didn't find

Download and install SpyBot,

http://security.kolla.de/

click the online tab to search for and download the updates, then shut down and relaunch SpyBot.

Go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks' .
These aren't needed for our present purpose, and you can always experiment with them later on.

Finally, after closing down Internet Explorer, click 'Check for problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds 'Fix selected problems'

you may have to run spybot more than once to clear everything

Remove everything pre-ticked in Red

steam

But thanks again

Hi

Fix these 2

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mysearchnow.com/searchbar.html

O16 - DPF: {4620BC29-8B8E-4F4E-9D92-1DB6633D6793} (SurferNETWORK Plugin) - http://rd1.surfernetwork.com/surferplugin.ocx

It is probably the DPF which changed you search

I can see you haven't installed spybot as I suggested - you would be advised to do so - see my above post.

Also click the immunize button in spybot for added protection

And check out this link for how to really protect your computer

Just to ensure all is well i've attach yet one more HJT scan.
If anything comes up please let me know. And as well my AVG anti virus found a .zip.exe file that that norton didn't find and I can not delete it. I keep getting a message that says the file is in use but i never launched the file to begin with. Any suggestions would be apperciated.

Second I'd like to now a bit more about HIGHJACKTHIS.
Is it what the programer claims and is it worth downloading?
NOPDB.EXE - Norton Utilities Speed Disk service
LSASS.EXE - Local Security Authentication Server (part of windows)
I'm not sure what SMagent.exe is...
