Startup Problem...

Hi,

When I started my computer today, I received the following error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

It also says to boot from the Win XP Setup Disk and use the recovery console. When I get into the recovery console it asks me which Windows installation would I like to log into? I believe it wants a number, but I'm not sure. What do I type there, and how do I go about solving this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I followed that procedure, but when I get to copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software it says 1 file copied after about 5 minutes and the computer stops responding. I can't type anything else after that.

You may want to take out the disk and clean it. Put it back in and redo the procedure. If that does not work you will have to set up your hard drive as a slave and copy and paste the file from your windows cd.

Nothing seems to work, so I'm trying to just reinstall Win XP. But now it's saying it can't create the \Windows folder. This is really strange.

You may want to download the powermax floppy and formatt with it. Then try to install windows... other than that i really do not have any ideas.
