comp running slow, recovery xp outdated

my wifes laptop was running fine a few days ago until monday. she came home from work and it was running really slow and she couldnt open any programs, she could barely get it into the start menu and couldnt get it any farther. after playing with it for a day trying to get into anything that might help fix the problem we decided to try the system recovery cd. when we put the cd in and restart the comp a message comes up saying something like "the windows xp version on the cd is outdated to the windows xp version on the computer" so right now we are stuck and dont have a clue as what to do. any help you could give would be much appreciated

My System

Hello and welcome to TSF
Run the recovery CD at boot up. Make sure the CD drive is the first boot drive in the BIOS.

hey outdated,

hmmm if your wife's internet on her computer is working fine, then i recommend download "spybot", "adware se", and even "AVG anti-virus" and install it on her computer. both spybot and adware are really good spyware utilities. AVG is a really good anti-virus utility.

just click on the links on my sig and you can download the programs. also i recommend downloading ccleaner as well, which is a good optimization tool. you can click on the links on my sig to download the programs.

install spybot and adware and update them. then run both programs and see if her computer has any spyware and then get rid of them with both programs. also install AVG and update it as well. then run the virus program and see if it detects any viruses on her computer.

to speed things up, install ccleaner and run the program. it should get rid of alot of junk on her computer such as old registry entries and more. another thing you can do is to defrag the computer. check out www.majorgeeks.com and download a good defragging program called "diskeeper". install it on her computer and defrag her hdd.

another thing you can do is to click on start -> run -> type in "msconfig" and then click on the startup tab. unchecking program that she doesnt need running.

good luck and post back if you need more help.
