Audio question

I have police scanner that I will be routing through the computer to stream over the internet. Once I do that I will be able to listen to it through the
computer speakers. If I want to put additional speakers in other rooms (i.e.- dinning room or den) can I add another audio card with output jacks to hook up additional speakers?

If you are just wanting multiple speaker sets playing the same sound source, a few miniplug splitters from your local electronic supply store will do the job just fine. Multiple sound cards are often a hassle and really would be unneccessary in your case, if I am understanding it correctly.

Does the video card act as an amplifier or should I hook the computer
audio out put to an amplifier and then run the xtra speakers?

video card? where did you get that? it doesn't affect sound at all...at all.

If the power produced by the sound card is not enough you will have to route it through an amplifier like you suggested.

Jack powered speakers are very weak. Computers put out just enough sound to handle some headphones and generally just to get the sound across a cord to an amplifier (whether in-speaker or seperate).

If you are looking for any decent volume, you will need an amp. That connection isn't too hard as there are many premade adapters taking miniplug to RCA but it is also very simple to purchase the ends and then solder your own adapter.

Computer speakers generally have their own amp built right in... I've never seen a pair that didn't.

i have a pair of koss speakers, that are louder unplugged than they are plugged in.

and i've seen a couple pairs of non amplified speakers.

back in the day, they weren't always amplified, and some sound cards came with 2watt/4watt and some as much as 8watts.
