sfc /scannow

I was running the program :- sfc /scannow It gets to a certain point, And then it says :-

"files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache

Insert your windows xp home edition cd-rom now"

Here lies my problem, My computer came with XP already installed, So i can't insert any cd. It did come with a recovery cd-rom but that doesn't do it.
I dont know if the files that i'm missing are important or not.
Is there anything i can do here ?

Thanks....

Yeah, those "System Restore" CD's ain't nothin' like the real thing.

Hmmm... reminds me of a song.

Anyway, can you borrow the real thing from a friend or maybe the dealer from which you purchased your comp?

Just curious, why are you running the System File Checker?

Does the recovery CD have a directory/folder named I386?

Is there an I386 folder on your hd?

Here's a web page that will show you how to set the computer.

#1. I'm running the file checker partly out of curiosity, My cd/dvd re-writer is playing up, And through the land of google i thought i would run this program to check everything was ok, I've done it before in the past and it was ok.
I'll need to ask a few of my friends if they have a copy of xp.

#2. I have a i386 in my HDD and my recovery disk.

Thanks for your replies.....

Basically, sfc is looking for the source files used to install xp.

If your CD drive is not working properly then it may not be able to access the CD.

You can use the registry editor to change the location for sfc to search. Since you have I386 on your hd you can set the SourcePath to C drive.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup SourcePath C:\

I've never done this before and i dont want to screw things up.......So...I've done regedit and got down to set up, it lists this in the setup folder:-

(default)
bootdir
CDinstall
Drivercachepatch
Installation source
Loglevel
Privatehash
Servicepacksourcehealth

Followed by other folders with :-

AppLogLevels
baseWinOptions
ExceptionComponents
Migration
Migrationdlls
OcManager
OOBE
OptionalComponents

Sorry to be a pain in the ar . But what should i do next ? I could guess but i dont want to make things any worse, Remember i'm a novice and quite chuffed at remembering how to do regedit.....

Copy the i386 folder and drop /past it into the relevant drive C:\ D:\ whatever.

Go to Start>Run and type regedit... which should lead you to a list of keys...

you want the H key Local machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\set-up (click on each one which will lead to the next)

you then need to set the sourcepath to the drive that you pasted the i386 folder into - e.g. C:\ D:\ whatever.

You should then be able to run sfc\ scannow on that drive without any further hassle.

Do you have a C:\I386 directory?
It has to be in the root (C:), not one of the subdirectorys of WINNT (they are not the same)

If you do not have C:\I386 then you will need to substitute the correct drive letter in the directions given below.
(ie: if your CD drive is E then use E in place of C).
----------------------------------------------
You don't have a SourcePath, so we will add one.

First, lets do a backup of that branch...
click the Setup folder so it is highlighted, then on menu select Registry-Export Registry File, make sure the Export Range (at bottom) is set to branch and shows HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
name the file setupbranch and save to desktop.

Next, Right Click on Setup, select New, String Value, and name it SourcePath
Now double click on SourcePath and for Value data: C:\
Close Registry Editor.

Should be good to go now. To test it do the sfc /scanonce and reboot.

Woo-Hoo

I would've replied sooner but toothache took over...:5-scared:
Thanks for the URL, I never found that when searching before, i wish i had to have saved some time...
After doing all of the above... Then after the re-boot, It asked for the windows xp home edition service pack 2 cd, I put that in and then it said insert windows home edition cd , and so on, So i had the option to continue and skip that file, Which i did and it carried on to the end, voila.
Thankyou all very much for helping me solve my problem...
