Firewall File/Printer sharing issue

I have a 3 computer network - (2) XP SP2 and (1) Win98SE. One of the XPs has a printer connected to LPT1 and set for sharing as well as 3 folders set for sharing but the other 2 computers cannot access. I have checked NETBios, User names & passwords, computer & workgroup names, pinging in all directions.
The one XP can access the other 2 computers and the Win98 can access the 1 XP. My computer has the firewall greyed out. I downloaded the windows resrouce kit but can't figure how to make the proper changes. Even though the grayed out "OFF" position is checked for the firewall I think it could be causing the problem.

thanks for your help !

Can these machines ping each other, are the computer ip's statically assigned or assigned by a router?

The 3 computers can ping each other. The IP address is assigned by the router.
