Question XP Pro locks up on welcome screen

My Sharp notebook with XP Pro locks up on the welcome screen. The hard drive status indicator stops. The only way to shut down is to power off. I can bring it up in the safe mode. I've checked for viruses - none. I've done a system restore to several days back - no change. I've removed all start up utilities in msconfig and rebooted - same result. I removed all unsigned drivers and retried - no change. Still locks up on the Welcome screen. Any suggestions?

Pop in your XP CD and do a Repair Install. If that does not work you should DL a tool from your HD manufacturer and verify that the drive is OK.

Hope it helps

XP locking up

I wondered about the fan but thought if I could boot in safe mode it wouldn't be that. I hear a fan noise when I turn the notebook upside down while it's on.

I will try the repair install next.

sorry misread your previous post. try start - run - sfc /scannow to see if the necessary files are intact before the repair installation.

Start/Run, sfc.exe does bring up any files. Can't get the computer to open the recovery CD's. Called for our tech man to make a visit. Thanks

*couldnt edit the post above*
if it is the geek squad watch out! Those kids are like brain washed possessed about money! Who ever i talked to about them told me a different scam story.
most charming one :
Two old ladies.. Calls geek squad for spyware in their system. they say we dont have anything important in the sytem can you reset everything ? geek goes : sure but i can clean it for you. he starts scanning and stuff. 2 days. charge :$380 . And he can not even clean up. he offers a eMachine desktop unit (celeron) for $600 + ( $2000 laptop ). lady goes i know i am naive but not stupid! says no thanks. calls us. $65 everything from scratch works excellent.

Says windows can't find sfc/scannow. Searched for scannow, the sfc/scannow and no luck. Notebook was involved in a serious motorcycle wreck with me and lost it's display among other things. Sent it back to Sharp for repairs. Seemed to be working fine for a few months and now this. May not be related but...
