Windows XP Start Menu Freezes

I have a computer from a friend.

Basically what happenes is everytime u got to the start menu it freezes, tried Task Manager and removing everything which also caused the system to freeze. My friend reloaded over the top and it still happens, i've tried different RAM still did it, took the HD out and scanned it for viruses on another pc nothing found, removed the CD-ROM Drive becuase at one stage it looked to be the problem but still no go, i've removed all non essential preipherals and still it freezes on that start menu.
its a late p3 with onboard everything and 256mb sd ram, only thing i can think of doing is a Move/Reload on the drive and trying that, does anyone know any other fix for this problem?

also try the chkdsk /r option. what you need to do is to bootup with your friend's windows xp cd. oh yeah, you will need to go into the bios and set the first boot device to cdrom. save settings and exit the bios.

put the windows xp cd in the cdrom and the computer should boot off of the windows xp cd. then on the main console choose repair. the computer will ask your for an admin password and just simply hit enter if you dont have one.

then on C: type in "chkdsk /r" without the "". this should take a bit of time and after this is finish, restart the computer and boot into windows reguraly and see if the problem goes away.

also if you can, check the eventlog and see if there are any error post there. you can go to the eventlog by right clicking on my computer -> click on manage -> and then click on the eventviewer. if there are errors post it here and ill see what i can do to help you out.

here is what you might want to do. After scaning your HD, and Adawre. i would check to see if cpu fan is functioning. i came across this problem once and did everything like you are doing. finally i realized the cpu fan was going and was causing over heat and resultin in freezup. let me know. good luck

Corrupt Profile

Create a new user in add/remove users. Log in as the new user.
See if the start menu still freezes. If it does not freeze, you have a corrupt user profile.
The best way to deal with this is to log on as administrator and copy your old profile to the new one you just created. After that, you can delete the old profile. If you don't know how to create , copy and delete profiles, post again and I will give you the details.
