Monitor shuts off at start up :(

Hi, i have a dell inspiron 8600 running XP. This morning i turned the computer on and all seemed normal... the monitor turns on and displays the startup screen up until the windows loading bar... right after that page goes away and windows would usually start the monitor turns black... but the computer is still on and i can hear the start up windows .wav file play. this has happend before coming out of stand by, but now it will never turn on.

just wondering if anyone has any suggestions... i just tryed starting up in safe mode and i can get into windows, so im' guessing maybe its a driver issue... i'm gona download those and see whats up. thanks :)

ok i'm fairly sure its not a boot issue. A) i can start up in safe mode perfectly... and B) i'm sitting here with both the problem computer and a second one and when i start up the problem computer adn the screen goes black about 2 seconds later the problem computer signs onto MSN... which means its basically perfectly functional and on but the screen just turns off. i'm thinking maybe its a virus which would be sad :(

Have you looked in the BIOS under power management? You might want to look at downloading the latest drivers. Have you installed a new vid card recently? If none of these work then I would go here to check for virii www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm follow the instructions carefully. Don't place your HiJackThis Log here go to the HJT Log Help Forum so someone can analyze it for you.

well i was having the same problem ten minutes ago. I took the cover off my pc to see what was up. It sounded like the power supply was giving out i replaced it with a spare and no more problems. Hope it works for you

Re: Monitor shuts off at start up :(

So the WHOLE computer shuts off, or just the monitor?

If it's just the monitor, maybe someone set the resolution too high, and like a primative OS that doesn't know enough to poll a monitor's status upon startup to check for incompatible resolutions (although I don't think any OS can do this as of yet) it just leaves the resolution at the high setting that is incompatible with your monitor.

Back in the old days, the monitor would skew the picture at a resolution or refresh rate it was not designed for...

This is my guess as to what is happening, simply boot in safe mode, turn the resolution all the way down, and reboot normaly.
