Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated...

Hello everyone.

Obviously I'm here because I have a technical issue I cannot seem to resolve on my own, any advice or assistance would be appreciated.

The symptoms:
When I direct Windows XP to shut down, 9 times out of 10, I recieve an error message: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT Authority\system.

Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated unexpectedly."

Now obviously, I just told my system to shut down, so it's not really that debilitating. However, one notable issue presents itself, that being Windows Updates (which I had not kept very current before noting this issue) will not properly apply, since the shutdown procedure engages.

Notably, this ONLY occurs when I select the shutdown option, and NOT always when I select shut down.

My system:
I'm running Windows XP, on a Toshiba A100 Notebook, I recently replaced the RAM sticks with two 2 GB DDR2 667 MHz chips (around the time the issue started, which is why I bring this up), everything else is stock. I've had the notebook for about 3 years now, with no serious issues.

Attempted fixes:
The most frequently returned cause for this error message appears to be the MSBlast worm, which notably is several years old, older than my Laptop, in fact. As stated, my Windows updates are not current, but I have scanned my system completely using AVG and their current definitions, with nothing returned. A simple look through my currently running process reveals nothing suspicious, and I can account for every process running.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated..

Hi and welcome to TSF

Just because it was a problem years ago, does not mean it no longer exists, especially on a PC that has not been kept up to date with fixes from MS.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Re: Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated..

You would definitely diagnose it as malware then? It doesn't line up precisely with the symptoms related to the msblast worm, so I wasn't certain. And is a windows XP error message returning, so I thought I'd post it as a general issue first.

That said, thanks for the reply, and I'll be perusing the linked information presently.

I went mostly on what you said about Not keeping the PC up to date. Chances are pretty good that you have other problems also.

I think the anti malware vendors, like your Anti virus, rely on you to keep your PC up to date as they can't really fix any holes that MS has or had.
