XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi,

My laptop is an Acer Aspire series 5560 with XP Home edition SP3 installed updated to the latest version. Recently XP started rebooting randomly and every time it starts again, a blue screen with the word 'STOP' and a few strings of code can be seen for a second before start up continues.

Then it'll go black & restart again with the same situation before finally loading. This seems to happen infrequently. It doesn't happen when I leave it on for an hour or more but some times when im using it for 20 min after the previous crash.

It got worse for a while and I noticed a request error for isaa.exe for a few seconds. The system crashed immediately when rebooted using last known configurations but runs normally after a while.

I had use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Avast Antivirus to do a thorough scan but no infected files were detected. Both were updated and no software were installed recently.

So now I'm hoping the good people of Tech Support Forum could help me with my problem!

Thank you.

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi blassmonde

On the boot menu, select disable automatic restart on system failure and then start Windows normally. Then when the blue screen occurs, it will not automatically restart. Write down the error code and any drivers mentioned on the blue screen and post them here.

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi afccarl666!

Thanks for the reply but I dunno when it'll reboot on itself. Is there some way to check for error in the log file because an error report was sent. How do I access that file?

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi -

The bugchecks from the dumps - 0x100000ea = THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

0xea = a driver is in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for hardware to become idle

Both dumps point right to your 2005 ATI drivers - they need to be updated in order to run in an XP SP3 environment -
Code:

FAULTING_THREAD: 8ac3bda8
DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: GRAPHICS_DRIVER_FAULT
PROCESS_NAME: ati2evxx.exe

FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0xEA_IMAGE_ati2mtag.sys_DATE_2005_12_20
All ATI drivers found in the dumps -
Code:

ati2cqag.dll Tue Dec 20 18:19:17 2005 (43A8BBA5) - ATI Video drivers
atikvmag.dll Tue Dec 20 18:24:03 2005 (43A8BCC3) " "
ativvaxx.dll Tue Dec 20 18:35:01 2005 (43A8BF55) " "
ati3duag.dll Tue Dec 20 18:39:53 2005 (43A8C079) " "
ati2mtag.sys Tue Dec 20 18:51:44 2005 (43A8C340) " "
ati2dvag.dll Tue Dec 20 18:52:01 2005 (43A8C351) " "
`

Your audio drivers are causing trouble as well - memory address overlaps occur when the driver is unloaded to make room for another in RAM, then reloaded again. Your 2005 Realtek audio drivers need to be updated -
Code:

OVERLAPPED_MODULE: Address regions for 'kmixer' and 'kmixer.sys' overlap

RtkHDAud.sys Mon Dec 19 01:37:36 2005 (43A67F60) - Realtek HD Audio

These drivers may be for a keyboard, but the 1st one from Dec 2000 does not look all that healthy when Googled -
Code:

POWERKEY.sys Tue Dec 19 02:29:50 2000 (3A3F389E) -->  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=POWERKEY.sys&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Hotkey.SYS Sun Apr 27 20:27:04 2003 (3EAC9F88)

All of these drivers need to be updated or the devices they are associated with should be disabled. Note the 2 Intel wifi drivers -
Code:

tifm21.sys Thu Jun 23 07:16:06 2005 (42BAC426) - SD card reader

b57xp32.sys Thu Jul 21 17:12:32 2005 (42E039F0) - Broadcom Ethernet

w39n51.sys Mon Dec 05 00:55:28 2005 (43940080) - Intel wifi driver
s24trans.sys Mon Nov 28 12:09:25 2005 (438B63F5) - Intel wifi packet driver

HSF_CNXT.sys Tue Oct 18 16:52:28 2005 (43558ABC) - Conexant audio
HSF_DPV.sys Tue Oct 18 16:53:21 2005 (43558AF1) " "
HSFHWAZL.sys Mon Oct 24 11:20:52 2005 (435D2604) " "
mdmxsdk.sys Wed Oct 05 16:58:05 2005 (4344688D) " "

AegisP.sys Mon Oct 24 07:38:50 2005 (435CF1FA) - AEGIS Protocol driver

lv321av.sys Wed Nov 30 20:28:57 2005 (438E7C09) - webcam driver
LVPrcMon.sys Wed Nov 30 20:31:35 2005 (438E7CA7) - Logitech scanner driver

btkrnl.sys Fri Dec 02 13:57:47 2005 (4390C35B) - Bluetooth
btserial.sys Fri Dec 02 13:59:20 2005 (4390C3B8) " "
SynTP.sys Fri Dec 16 16:15:06 2005 (43A3588A) - Synaptics touchpad

`

The primary reason for the BSODs occurring is the old drivers comming into contact with new Microsoft XP SP3 drivers as well as your September 2009 anti-virus drivers. These all appear to be OK -
Code:

win32k.sys Fri Apr 17 05:26:26 2009 (49E87572)
KSecDD.sys Wed Jun 24 04:18:40 2009 (4A420B90)
ntkrpamp.exe Tue Aug 04 07:20:04 2009 (4A784394)

Aavmker4.SYS Tue Sep 15 03:53:23 2009 (4AAF7223)
aswRdr.SYS Tue Sep 15 03:54:20 2009 (4AAF725C)
aswTdi.SYS Tue Sep 15 03:54:29 2009 (4AAF7265)
aswFsBlk.sys Tue Sep 15 03:55:18 2009 (4AAF7296)
aswSP.SYS Tue Sep 15 03:55:29 2009 (4AAF72A1)
aswMon2.SYS Tue Sep 15 03:56:12 2009 (4AAF72CC)
`

Update all device drivers as mentioned above.

Old drivers + New drivers running together in kernel mode = BSODs.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (ea)
The device driver is spinning in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for
hardware to become idle. This usually indicates problem with the hardware
itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
If the kernel debugger is connected and running when watchdog detects a
timeout condition then DbgBreakPoint() will be called instead of KeBugCheckEx()
and detailed message including bugcheck arguments will be printed to the
debugger. This way we can identify an offending thread, set breakpoints in it,
and hit go to return to the spinning code to debug it further. Because
KeBugCheckEx() is not called the .bugcheck directive will not return bugcheck
information in this case. The arguments are already printed out to the kernel
debugger. You can also retrieve them from a global variable via
"dd watchdog!g_WdBugCheckData l5" (use dq on NT64).
On MP machines (OS builds <= 3790) it is possible to hit a timeout when the spinning thread is
interrupted by hardware interrupt and ISR or DPC routine is running at the time
of the bugcheck (this is because the timeout's work item can be delivered and
handled on the second CPU and the same time). If this is the case you will have
to look deeper at the offending thread's stack (e.g. using dds) to determine
spinning code which caused the timeout to occur.
Arguments:
Arg1: 8af2c340, Pointer to a stuck thread object. Do .thread then kb on it to find
	the hung location.
Arg2: 8a8ecf60, Pointer to a DEFERRED_WATCHDOG object.
Arg3: 8a8ecf30, Pointer to offending driver name.
Arg4: 00000001, Number of times this error occurred. If a debugger is attached,
this error is not always fatal -- see DESCRIPTION below. On the
blue screen, this will always equal 1.

THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M (100000ea)
On MP machines it is possible to hit a timeout when the spinning thread is
interrupted by hardware interrupt and ISR or DPC routine is running at the time
of the bugcheck (this is because the timeout's work item can be delivered and
handled on the second CPU and the same time). If this is the case you will have
to look deeper at the offending thread's stack (e.g. using dds) to determine
spinning code which caused the timeout to occur.
Arguments:
Arg1: 8ac3bda8, Pointer to a stuck thread object. Do .thread then kb on it to find
	the hung location.
Arg2: 8ab1cd00, Pointer to a DEFERRED_WATCHDOG object.
Arg3: bacf7cbc, Pointer to offending driver name.
Arg4: 00000001, Number of times "intercepted" bugcheck 0xEA was hit (see notes).

THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M (100000ea)

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi blassmonde

I took a look at the dumps, and one says its 'probably caused by ati2mtag.sys' and the other is 'probably caused by ati2cqag.dll'

So it seems that ATI drivers are the problem. Try updating the drivers for your card.

EDIT:Beat me to it jcgriff2 . And found a lot more info, I need more practice with this debugging business. Ah well, at least what I found is the same as part of yours

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi Carl -

Nice job flagging those ATI drivers - they are the primary cause.

Did you look through the logs I posted... for the commands to list drivers and such?

Code:
!analyze -v; kv; k; r; lmnt; lmntsm; .bugcheck
Code:
!for_each_module .echo @#ModuleName fver = @#FileVersion pver = @#ProductVersion
Try them and see the output. The semi-colons in the first seperate commands; the 2nd code box is all one command.

JC

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi JC

It wasn't too hard to find the ATI drivers as a problem - It said so at the bottom

I'll have a look at the commands you posted. I think its worth learning to debug, you never know when it will come in handy

Thanks

Ah... but it is not really true debugging -- we have no source code!! We're just looking for those drivers that go 'bump in the night' - and then blame one or none (hardware).

Check out the PDF at the end of post 1 --> http://www.vistax64.com/general-disc...tep-guide.html

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi Guys!

Thanks for the solution. I have been trying to find all updates for the drivers but I can't seem to find some of them. I have only found some here:

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads_gd.html

notebook>aspire>aspire 5560>xp home edition 32>all

Are there any sites available for drivers download or an auto update for these drivers?

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

Hi again blassmonde

The acer ones look good, all from 2008. You can open device manager (devmgmt.msc in run), right click the hardware and search for updated drivers for the others, but the ATI are the main ones you need.

And thanks again JC. One problem I have had is the symbols. Some of them work, some don't. My path is the same as yours apart from where they are downloaded to. I even tried installing the standalone symbol files for each xp version yesterday, that completely destroyed it . I made a thread a month or so back about this, and the steps there didn't help either. Maybe Windows doesn't want me to see whats going on

Hi afccarl666!

I have downloaded most of the drivers on Acer's website but to install the new ATI driver I need to update my BIOS up to v1.15. I already downloaded the v1.28 year 2009 but haven't a clue how to do a BIOS update. Do i need to backup anything before updating?

Do I need to do an OS reformat after updating?

Re: XP in laptop reboots on its own

you need to follow acers instructions for the bios update

you do not need to reinstall the op.system after the bios update
