computer won't go into safe mode
At the start up screen I am repeatedly tapping the F8 key, but it doesn't go into safe mode, although if I try going to setup or continue (F1 and F2) it works, so I know its not freezing. I have tried with multiple key boards so its not that. Maybe the mobo? or the OS?

Please post brand and model of your computer. The key that you need to press depends on the motherboard/bios.

Re: computer won't go into safe mode
It's an AMD processor on a MSI mobo. I tried F5, that didn't work either. If it helps, my computer doesn't boot up until I press F2 (continue) so it doesn't boot up on its own

What else do you see on that screen? Is there a message indicating an error? Please report what you see there.

Re the problem of accessing Safe Mode/getting to the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen. Press F2 to continue .... THEN .... start tapping F8 That SHOULD work.

Re: computer won't go into safe mode
No worries ... happens to the best of us at times!
Now, do you wish to sort out what is not configured correctly in your BIOS? Tell me what you see on that "choose F1 or F2" screen ... you are looking for something that is not right.

Re: computer won't go into safe mode
well for starters it says I dont have any IDE drives, which I dont except for my video card, but it also doesnt show my CD drive. Its an old CD drive so it very well could be shot, but I have check the cables, and the pins and they are all in order, and the light is on on the CD drive.

Re: computer won't go into safe mode
Your CD-ROM disk drive should be showing as one of the IDE drives: If it is not showing then there is a problem.
You don't have any IDE hard drives, so the remaining available IDE devices should be showing as NONE. (I am guessing you have a total of 4 IDE positions available) I presume you are using a SATA hard drive. Try this ... With all power off, physically disconnect the CD-ROM drive (pull the data and power cables). Now try starting your system. Do you have a working floppy drive? Does that show up correctly? (This seems most often to be the problem.) Does the date and time show correctly?
