Windows 7 as dual boot with Xp

I have read a few notes on removing one OS from a dual boot system.I wondered if it is worth installing windows 7 on a separate partition to see how it performs.
I recently installed a 500Gb sata which has to be run on IDE BUS Master Enabled option because it crashes on the sata option.Someone showed me this option when the system somehow reverted to the sata option on its own.It does this occasionally at which point I have to enter the Bios options and change it back to the IDE mode.I thought on my old Asus set-up a HD of more than 250Gb had to be recognized on the sata set-up.
It is operating well on Xp, I just thought as I have the space on the HD if trying "7" is a valid option or is it "begging" for trouble?

u can install xp beside windows 7
install xp on patition c

and whenever u wanna get rid of one of them,,, just change the start up option from windows xp and select 7 as first boot and time out = 0
and simply delete xp files as any other when u r on windows 7

Re: Windows 7 as dual boot with Xp

Thank you for the info.I downloaded a "tiny Windows 7" installation.699Mb.It copies the files OK but won't recognize the HD even with the ATA or Raid boot discs I use for regular 3rd party installation[F.6] This is on a K8V SE motherboard. When the installation calls to insert drive recognition software, I click on the Floppy A and it scans the disc but still does not recognize the HD.
It is not crucial for me install this OS.More interest.I noticed all the Doctors at the local clinic are now using Windows 7.

You downloaded Windows 7? Maybe that is why it isn't working. Get a legal copy then try again.

Re: Windows 7 as dual boot with Xp

The download was from "Usenext", I just wanted to use up my download quota before the 10th. Having said that, all the comments from previous downloaders were very good.
The "upper" to use their expression had "trimmed" this version to 699mb.Having removed many extra files not required for the basic operation of the OS.The problem is on a Sata set-up, getting it to recognize the HD.Having said that, I ran a compatibility scan on my PC and it recommended upgrading my graphics card so "Aero" would work better.I don't know what "Aero" is and am quite content for now with my old FX5500 graphics card.
So for now its academic.
I did format a partition on my Hitachi external HD 103GB doing nothing at the moment.Interesting that after moving all the files to another partition, even when there is nothing visible on the partition it shows 2.7GB was "occupied".I believe what it couldn't show me was the "remains" of Windows 7 that I mounted on a virtual drive using power ISO installed on that partition before I cleaned it.No searches showed anything but its total capacity of 103GB was only restored after formating.
Sorry to waffle on there.
Maybe there is another OS I can run on the external drive, like "Redhat".Just to try something else.

Re: Windows 7 as dual boot with Xp

Simply stated, the K8V SE motherboard does not support windows 7.[reply from ASUS support] It also runs best on the "IDE BUS MASTER ENABLED" set-up as opposed to the sata raid. But as I have only 1 500GB HD I suppose it doesn't need raid.
So I have installed "Ubuntu" along side Xp and am learning the basics of this OS.
