Black Space on Desktop

Hey guys,

New to the forum here. I'm experiencing a problem on my work desktop computer that just started last week out of the blue. The right side of my desktop has dead space to the right and down on the bottom. It's black. It doesn't help if I adjust my picture over to that side. If I move a window over the dead space then it creates a frozen picture or messed up picture (not using the right terminology I'm sure) but it leaves behind what previously covered that area.

I haven't changed my display settings that I'm aware of. Any ideas. I took a screenshot but cant figure out how to paste it in here. Thanks in advance for the help!

If this is a flat screen monitor (TFT) it is likely that these are areas of dead pixels. How old is your monitor? It may be covered under a warranty. Most have 3 years now.

Re: Black Space on Desktop

The monitor is two years old. I don't think it's dead pixels. Because I can move stuff over the black spots. The row of black is about two inches wide, but changes as I change the aspect ratio. Also when I move windows over it (like my internet browser, the black area takes on that look when I move the window over it, and remains that when I move the window off. So they seem to be working.

Re: Black Space on Desktop

My first thought is to just try a different monitor on the machine from one of your other work computers or try your monitor on a different machine.

That would prove the monitor one way or the other.

Assuming that the monitor is ruled out, removing and then reinstalling the latest graphic card drivers would be my next step.

You don't mention but is this an added graphics card or the onboard one that most motherboards have these days? I've had plenty of them go bad on systems which were cured by installing a graphics card instead of using the onboard one.

Re: Black Space on Desktop

It's a work computer and came as is. There have been no extra graphics cards installed. I will try the monitor approach tomorrow and maybe bring one from home. Then take a look at the drivers.
