[SOLVED] Registry Key Causes BSOD
Accessing the following Key(s) in the registry results in a BSOD (Stop Code 000000008E)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{16D7A93E-6087-4567-AFDA-B0005107771E} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{16D7A93E-6087-4567-AFDA-B000 5107771E} They appear to be identical and behave the same way These keys can be expanded to show the next level - Labeled "1.0" with a value of "HPBasicDetection 3.0 Type Library" but trying to access the next level down cause the BSOD. I have tried to uninstall all the HP apps - mostly successful except for HP Solution Center 9.0 - using Add/Remove Progs. I tried System Restore but for some reason it doesn't 'take' - it runs but gives me the message when Win restarts. i.e. no Restore point seems to work. A little while ago I had to run Chkdsk and it repaired some disk problems. Chkdsk now runs with no more errors. reported. The file problems may be a the root of the BSODing but now I can't figure out how to get rid/replace the offending entry in the Registry. I am running Win XP Pro Version 2002 SP 3. Everything seems to be running fine. I only found this because my AV prog seemed to be causing the BSOD. By elimination, I finally determined to happen only when doing scan of system areas which I then further investigated to find the Registry entry is the cause. MUUUUltiiii hours to get to this point. So how can I fix the registry without causing the system to crash while I am doing it? |

Re: Registry Key Causes BSOD
That is described as a 'Product detection module for various HP applications' - as such, if you are running an HP computer, it will be an integral component. If not, then it got installed with a printer or whatever.
http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache...&ct=clnk&gl=ca edit: or maybe it is part of the P&P function for Windows - very little on it. |

Re: Registry Key Causes BSOD
The target the Key points to is legit - part of HP Scanner software. I tried finding a .reg file entry to just copy over the defective key values but could not find it (nor am I sure this would work as anything that goes 'near' this Key causes a BSOD). I'm guessing I will have to do something in the Recovery Console to fix the Registry file (C:\Windows\system32\Config\software) but I don't have a clue what or how.

Re: Registry Key Causes BSOD
I have confirmed the problem is in the C:\Windows\system32\Config\software file (which makes the hive for HK_LM_Software in the registry). I used a bootable Linux DVD to copy the file to another Win XP computer, and when I attempted to open the previously identified problem key, that computer went BSOD as well. Now the problem I have is how to replace the defective "software" file without messing up my machine. I will start another thread with this as the subject.
