and welcome to the Forum

If you want to salvage fies, you can take the drive out and attach it in place of a cd/dvd drive in a working pc to copy them.

Then you can reinstall XP

Sounds like you possibly have some bad RAM. You could try reseating the memory. And if you have more than one stick installed, try swapping where they are installed.

Her PC should still boot from HDD (depending on how you attach it). It's preferable that you connect it to an unused connector, but if none are available, you may need to disconnect another device such as her CDROM/DVDROM. Also, assuming this is an IDE drive, you may have to change the jumper from Master to Slave.

Attaching your drive to the secondary channel ( the one with CD/DVD drives ) will insure that her machinedoes not try to boot from it. Once hers boots to her operating system, you create afilder on her drive for your files and just copy the files from your drive to that folder

Getting the files off is easy as long as the drive is still good. Go get a USB to IDE(SATA) cable kit. A kit like that costs about 15 bucks. Then take the old hard drive out and connect it Sisters pc via the USB cable. Sisters pc will pick up the drive as an external hard drive. From there just copy your files.

Can you boot in safe mode? What happens then?
