Generic host process for win32 services error
Hi,
I have win xp sp2. A few days back my pc hanged. when i restarted i got the "Generic host process for win32 services error" error. also my nod32 showed svchost error. I have since then scanned my system with nod32 and found no infection. I have carried out the regedit option too...the closing of ports 445 and 135. Also done winsock reset option. Nothing seems to have worked so far Since that day i haven't got the "generic host process.." error window but my internet connection icon and local connection icon still seem to hang after a few hours (no specific time)resulting in no internet and when i try to shut down my pc it hangs at "saving your settings" stage and i am forced to manually cut the poweroff. eta1 - after forced manual shutdown when i start the pc everything seems to go back to normal i am able to access internet until the hang happens again. I would really appreciate any help i can get, please help! Thanks. Looking forward Last edited by skylar3; 09-11-2009 at 10:42 AM. Reason: eta1 |

Re: Generic host process for win32 services error
You can try running system Restore and going back to a time before the issue occurred.
You could also boot into Safe Mode and run some cleanup utilities (ie: Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, & MalwareBytes). Then reboot and run ccleaner. Otherwise, I would likely boot from the XP CD and perform a Repair (just to make sure no core XP files are damaged) and then I'd reinstall SP2 (and in my case SP3). And install all of the latest drivers for all of the hardware. Lastly, copy off the important files and reinstall XP. |

Re: Generic host process for win32 services error
Thank you very much for your help Dogg!
I will try to see what I can do from the above options you have provided. I have a couple of questions. is sp3 more stable than sp2 for the pc? do i need to reformat my hd in order to reinstall xp if i go for that option? |

Re: Generic host process for win32 services error
When it was released, there were a few issues with a limited number of machines...mostly OEM machines and it wasn't an issue of stability. Personally, I haven't had any issues with any of my PC's. Plus there's the fact that sp1 and sp2 are no longer supported and you don't have the latest security releases.
You don't need to reformat and you could even reinstall over the previous folder. But I'd recommend formatting as it will clear away all of the garbage and orphaned files that are likely littering your HDD. |
