Question Restore function doesn't work anymore

I can't use or run "restore" anymore on XP machine. I have no idea what happened. I don't seem to have any other problems.

Re: Restore function doesn't work anymore

It sounds as if System Restore may have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling the feature. Here's how:
  • In Control Panel or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options and then View tab
  • Under Advanced Settings, scroll down and find "Show hdden files and folder." Check the box.
  • Find "Hide extensions for known files types." Uncheck that box. Click Apply, OK.
  • In Windows Explorer, find your Windows folder (usually on the C: drive but not always). Navigate to the inf folder and open it.
  • Find a file named sr.inf
  • Right click the file and select Install.

Important: This creates a new installation of System Restore, but it will delete any restore points that you had created previously.

kind regards,

Re: Restore function doesn't work anymore

tallin,

Did all that and after hitting "install" I received a message that I needed "sr.sys" file. I browsed to that and hit OK. Rebooted and when trying to see if restore would work, I recived the following error message "0x5c029836" referenced memory at "0x000000" cannot be read.

Any further thoughts?

thanks,

Bill

Re: Restore function doesn't work anymore

tallin,

Upon further investigation...after hitting install I received a message that it needed file "srframe.mmf". I found that and said OK. Restore now appears to be working fine.

I really appreciate your help.

My System

Re: Restore function doesn't work anymore

Hi Mackey,

My appologies for being so long in replying to your thread, but for some reason this forum has been off line for me for over a day.

Good news your issue with System Restore is working. There are a couple of other ideas you also could put in your memory bank in case there are other problems along the way with System Restore.

Firstly, there are several things that can cause System Restore to stop working (either stop making restore points, or be unable to restore from them). Something many people don't realize is that if you disable the Task Scheduler service, System Restore won't create restore points. To start it up, click Start | Run and type services.msc and then click OK. Scroll down to "Task Scheduler" in the left column (Name). If the service status isn't "Started," right click and select Start. Also be sure the Startup Type is set to "Automatic."

Another problem that can mess up System Restore is low disk space. The service needs at least 1 to 2 GB free on the partition where Windows is installed in order to make restore points. If it doesn't have that, free up some space (delete or move files).

Run SFCScannow to make sure your OS has no corrupted or missing .dll files. You will need your Windows OS CD for this so put it in the your Rom Drive before following the step by step shown in the link for your operating system. For Vista, make sure you are running the scan as Administrator.

You may also like to check My Computer | Properties | System Restore | highlight C:\Drive | Settings | set the slider to 1% (1095 MB approximately).

This is also a good link for troubleshooting System Restore there is a section for Vista in the tabs at the top.

Let us know if these extra suggestions are of assistance to you.

kind regards,
