I have used a 7 diff virus/mal-ware/trojan scaners and i dont find anything. I have no firewalls installed and the windows firewall is turned off. I have my tcp/ip half open connection limit at 200. I have not installed any updates. My system has been working fine since dec 14 2007 origional Installiation

What i have tried

1) I have tried Clearing the dns cache. did not work
2) I have tried resetting tcp/ip stack. did not work
3) I have tried all types of virus/mal-ware/ad-ware/trojan scanning. found nothing.
4) I have used sysinternals tools so see if anything was running that could be causing it and i have nothing
5) I have updated the tcp/ip driver to build 5.1.2600.2827. did not work.
6) I have have added reg keys to stop windows from dns caching. did not work
7) I have restored my c drive with a previous drive image backup dating back to 6-7-09 before the problem arisen. Problem is still there

I am very computer Tech savy. Talk as much tech to me as needed. I successfully repair many problems with clients computers.
Im really at a loss as how to solve this prolem. it just does not make any sence to me. I have not really changed my system setup. Any help would be greatlly appreciated.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

dhcp or static ip?

if you can't browse via IP, it's not DNS.
if you can ping and tracert it's not your NIC. VM's too.
it's not flooding port 25 and port 80 if other computers are ok.

it must be something related specifically to your IP address, not your computer.

are you sysadmin on your network?

Re: Random Internet connection loss

Thank you for looking at my topic.
I aim the system admin and its a home network.
I got At&t ADSL 6Mb/512kb i also have a static externial IP
The internet setup is Westell 6100 ADSL Modem to a wrt54g linksys router. Ive had this same setup since 2003. The computer in question is wired to the router. It gets its ip from the DHCP.

This situation leads me to think its some web browsing problem in windows. it only seems to stop at random times when im browsing the web. Sometimes i can browse the web for days before it happens. sometimes it happens twice a day.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

It just happend again before typing this. and I notice that if i disable the internet gateway in network connections and re-enable it the connection comes back and works like it never happened. Perhaps the windows xp gateway is loosing its connetion with the router?
while the web browsers were not working i loaded my windows 98 virtual machine on Virtual PC and i could browse the net in side it.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

i would try setting a static IP address for your workstation first.

if that doesn't work, i'd replace your router.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

Try editing your hosts file. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc open the Hosts file with Notepad. Delete all lines after the Example:

# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Save the file and try it again.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

Thank You all for the replies. I will try the suggested posts and let you all know if anything helped.

My Power Supply is a Antec 650 watt SLi Ready PSU.
I dont think im maxing the power yet but u never know. I only have 1 video card so the other Sli power is not used. As for powering my drives I tried to evenlly distribute the power connectors between the drives so i wont overload a channel.

Re: Random Internet connection loss

I have installed the drivers as suggested and the problem still persists.

I wounder if its Firefox doing it. Im using a rather old version 1.0.8.

Or perhaps its the internet connection gateway connection stalling ( the icon under my network places).

I notice that if i close all web browsers and disable then re-enable the internet connection gateway conenction it fixes the problem temporarily. Eventully the problem will happen again.

Im gonna try to see if Fire fox does it on my laptop by installing v 1.0.8 of firefox.
