Cannot burn to CDR with inbuilt Win XP software ?

Hello,

I cannot burn to CDR using the XP inbuilt feature, i'm not sure why. I have Nero installed and have to run everything through that program but i'd like to be able to burn mp3's with a simple drag and drop to the Drive E: icon (my CD writer).

I read the MS site and it says i should get a screen like this:

But i only get these screens on my setup:

i.e there's no "recording" tab and therefore no option to "enable CD writing" ?. What can i do to get the inbuilt XP recording feature working again ?

You can't make an audio CD with the XP built in burner you have to use Windows Media Player or better yet Nero. If you want to make a Data CD of your MP3's then you right click the file with the MP3's in them, and choose Send To... your CD Burner. another file pops up saying " You have files waiting to be sent to the CD". Click on "Write these files to CD" and it will burn them.

Hi Spike!. I am trying to burn an mp3 CD (as they play on my car radio).

But i don't have the option to "send to CD" on my setup, not sure why!. Here's what i get when i do a right click on an mp3 folder (or file):

As you can see, there's no option to send these mp3 files/folders to any CDROM (my CDROM is on E:\)

Does your user have Admin rights? Or are you using a limited user account?
If it is a limited account you need to enable the builtin burning capability for limited user accounts.

Hi, nope i have full administrator rights (as far as i'm aware). I'm the only user on this PC!

Go to Start/Run and type sendto the Sendto folder opens up, drag your CD/DVD burner form My Computer into this folder.

If you are not seeing the Recording tab, that means Windows is not recognizing it as a recordable device. Give this a try.

Hi, i've tried that and the CD icon did appear in my "send to" list, however when i put in a blank recordable CDR (or CDRW) and right clicked on the mp3's - "send to" - "CD" i got this warning:

I'll have to look into Squashman's suggestion that my system isn't seeing the CDRom as a recording device (yet Nero and CDBurner XP are !!)

Squashman, you're a star !!!!! - that worked !!. For some reason the registry key was set to 3 and it should have been 2 (for a CDRW drive)

Hmm, however, it wont work with CDRW's ! - even formatted/unformatted/brand new ones, any ideas ?? :

Actually it's CDR and CDRW, both don't work. Ah well it looks like i'll have to stick to 3rd party software!.....nevermind
