Task Manager & Start Up Problems

I have had problems with my PC at home for past week whereby the desktop and start bar do not display on start up and have been using the Task Manager function to open up required programs etc.

Have also been having problems with Internet and as a result unistalled and reinstalled the Norton 360 Security. However, since having doen this I amnow unable to to load up Task Manager at all as it says it has been disbaled by Administrator. I know that you can do various things like going to to Start, Run & Regedit.exe etc but I cannot even do this as I do not have a Start bar to work from just a blank screen on start up. Therefore how do I go about resolving this problem as cannot bring anything up at all, with the excepetion of AOL which seems to be loading itself automatically on start up of PC?

Also, have been having problems with AOL over past couple of nights whereby it loads up alright but then keeps disconnecting which means that the activation process for the reinstallation for Norton 360 keeps crashing as cannot get a connection.

Am at a lost. Please advise. thanks

Re: Task Manager & Start Up Problems

Hello littlepanther

I think this is a malware problem and it`s hard to fix it if you cannot run any programs.

See if you can boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 continually during boot up.
There should be a Welcome Screen with your Account and the "Main Admin" Account. Try to access the "Main Admin" Account. Just press Enter when asked for a password if you did not set one at the installation of XP.

If you get in, can you do anything here?

Also at the Safe Mode Options screen select
'Safe mode with command prompt'

At the command prompt type
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Hopefully this will open System Restore, so restore to before the problem started
