Wierd problem starting up my computer. Please Help!
Just recently this started happening, it might have been right after I ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Spybot-Search&Destroy antispyware programs and then cleaned all infections, but what's happening is:
When I shut down my computer (or even hibernate it) and then leave it off for a while (usually overnight), and then I wake up in the morning and press the power button, the computer will being to load, get to the Windows XP loading screen with the loading bar and then when that is done it will just shut off... sometimes it would shut off at a different time like at the start of a FAT32 system check, and once it just froze at the Intel Pentium screen. The wierd thing is after it just auto-shuts off, the power button on my tower doesnt work, and it won't turn on the computer, so I either have to hold it down for a few seconds or go to the back of the tower and shut off its power and turn it back on. Then it will try to boot up again and either fail, succeed(sometimes), or bring me to a black screen with white writing saying to run in various Safe Mode ways or Last Known Settings That Worked, or Start Windows Normally. I kinda have to play around with these until it finally decides to run... Sorry for this wall of text but I wanted to be specific. Could this be anything that my antivirus programs deleted(essential files that were potentially infected?), or is my HD just dying? If you need any info on my computer just ask.. I really want to fix this. |

First step would be to run chkdsk to make sure your hard drive is fine. If that passes, you can try sfc /scannow on a command line with the windows install CD in the optical drive.

Re: Wierd problem starting up my computer. Please Help!
did you make your computer? Only old (5yr +) systems come oem with fat32 & xp...so why fat32? multiple os and want easy access from linux? there are ntfs workarounds for that. You could convert your fat32 to ntfs. once you do its not possible to go back with the microsoft utility.
In anycase. What are your complete system specs. EVERYTHING PLEASE 1) Rule out hardware first. Run the full gamut of hardware test's including measuring system and cpu temps and VOLTAGE. [Ram, HDD] 2) Check for dust in your system 3) Keep your drivers up to date. Video, MB, OS. In the end, i think its a power supply issue. Quality counts here. time and time again blown pws can be avoided with higher quality manufacturing. note:: high wattage number = the peak your system draws. Drive spin ups, optical drive use, heavy gaming, extensive usb use (using your computer to charge usb devices) etc etc. most draw is usually at bootup. sometimes bringing back a system from hibernate will also cause issues. |

1) I have no idea how to fully test my hardware especially for temp/voltage. 2) Will check for dust, doubt that it's the problem though 3) My drivers are uptodate as far as I know of.. Also, is there a certain program I should run to provide full specs of my computer? |

Re: Wierd problem starting up my computer. Please Help!
EDIT: Another thing is that once it auto-shuts down, the green light on the power button is still shining, which is probably why pressing it doesnt start the computer back up and requires me to turn off all power and reboot.
Also quick question: Is there any chance this is a virus? If so how likely? Last edited by jewunit69; 02-12-2009 at 12:54 PM. |
