Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

Hello! This looks so far to be a pretty lively and intelligent forum, so let me make this first post and see how y'all respond.

So I just helped a customer pick out and buy this beautiful little HP laptop (dv2940se, amd 64-x2 turion tl-62, 4gb ram, 320gb hd, 14.1" screen) on the condition that I perform the service of rolling it back to Windows XP.. which is a maneuver I've done on other laptops with success. I booted it up in Vista to write down some of the main device drivers from the horse's mouth, and managed to find most of them - graphics, wireless, lan, modem, chipset, etc. - but I'm having a hard time getting any kind of xp-compatible drivers for the proprietary stuff such as the HP media remote control, bluetooth, TV tuner, and quick launch buttons..

This laptop is FREAKING GORGEOUS, but it would be even more beautiful with one of my pretty little custom nLite-made xp-cd's with all the drivers and their key integrated.. so I don't need the rigmarrole on how-to, just the links is fine.. let me know if you want any more details on the parts.

Any help with this would be mucho appreciado, as it is most frustrating running up against the official anti-xp support embargo again and again. I think somebody should up and subpoena the fskers, personally... that would light a firecracker under their collective buttoces.

Regards,
- momono

If you click on XP you can get the quicklaunch buttons drivers there.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

I examine the Vista driver file for the TV tuner and it seems to be for the Hauppauge WinTV 885 (based on the Connexant CX23885 chip).
You can try two things: install the Vista driver (not sure if it'll work, but that's something to try). Or else go here http://www.hauppauge.com/site/suppor...t_pci_881.html The problem with the second solution is it doesn't state anything about what OS(es) are supported, and it seemed originally designed for the 881 (which I think is a PCI board) - but it does say 88x, so I assume it should work with any from the same family (I looked closer at the driver file and it states the same connexant chip). Also note the driver from hauppauge is a tad older than the one provided by HP (2005 vs. 2007)
Feel free to report your results as to whether either work or not.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

I examined the Vista driver file named "Software Support for HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology (Microsoft Windows Vista)"
What I can't figure out is if it'll install the bluetooth drivers too, or if it's just application software. You can try running it to find out.
If the file doesn't run, extract it with 7-zip or winrar and run the file named setup.exe in the win32 folder.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

I looked at the manual for it, and the remote control requires QuickPlay. There's a download for it in the Vista section named "HP QuickPlay Web Update", and it's 177MB (no way to tell if it'll work with XP, but you're free to try).

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

Wow, that was quick... and very helpful.. I will try all of that, yeah it looks like that tuner driver works with XP even though it's designed for Vista. I've got it up and running xp - looks like bluetooth, graphics and broadcom wireless all carried through the integration, but now I'm looking for wired LAN (which doesn't seem to be included in the official HP page for XP *or* Vista..). The yellow question marks in Device manager are now 'Coprocessor', 'Ethernet Controller', 'PCI Device', 'SM Bus controller', and 'Unknown Device'... 3 or 4 of these are the HDAUDIO codec which still needs installed, modem and wired lan drivers.

Usually for unpacking/integration I right-click the autoextractor and use the WinRAR shell options to extract everything to a folder right there, then integrate the whole folder with nLite. Works like a charm for some things, not so much for others..

Thanks for the advice so far, I'll let you know as the process moves along.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

For audio, the Vista drivers (Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 Driver) might work for XP too. If the file doesn't run, right click and extract using 7-zip or WinRAR, and run the file setup.exe in the v32 folder.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

You're right about the network card drivers not being included for XP nor Vista. They might be bundled with the Vista OS, so HP didn't bother putting a download.
However the service guide says it's a Marvell E8039 card.
Go to http://www.marvell.com/ and click on drivers at the very top.
On the second section (select your Marvell part number) select 88E039 then click submit.
It will list a bunch of packages (I hate vendors that put all their drivers is single packages, but that's just the way Marvell operates I guess...)
Just grab either
"Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 x86 and x64 Multi-Language Installer (32- and 64-bit) for Yukon Devices" (1.16MB and has a setup.exe file) or
"Windows XP/Server 2003 x86 Driver (32-bit) for Yukon Devices v10.64.2.3" (smaller and tidier at 457KB, but manual installation (have to use device manager and point to the folder you extract this to)).

Note: I have a Marvell gigabit ethernet port on my motherboard, and from time to time I do reformats, and I have to reinstall the driver for it. The manual installation has never failed me. However there was one instance when the setup program didn't work. No matter how many times I ran it, it would go to the end and tell me the program didn't install successfully and exit. I can't say if it was the specific version I downloaded that day, or if something was set up differently, but I just thought you should know it happened.

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

Hey, thanks again -

It was NOT a marvell anything, unless nvidia has taken to adding this to their chipsets. (that solution reminds me of a gateway I did a little while ago - I actually got a guy on chat and asked him straight up who manufactured the wireless card, and he told me Gemtek when it was a Broadcom - read it from the service manual, said he...) After trying to install a few versions of that with no success, I went and ended up using HWiNFO to detect my motherboard chipset - reported the mobo as a Wistron 30D6 sporting a nVidia nforce 630M (c67) chipset.. So I went and found the XP chipset installer for this and it worked just fine, found and installed just about everything including the network driver. Glad I went and found this, because HP would've had me running around without a chipset driver aside from graphics..

Now the only thing remaining is the sound... I ended up having to install the HDAUDIO codec from mediafire, and immediately afterward it finally detected the Conexant Smartaudio 221 - and installed it, 'successfully' it said. Only thing is, even though XP device manager reports that it's working fine, when I go into Sound properties via control panel it tells me I don't have an audio device. So, something's amiss - the modem on 'hdaudio bus' tells me it's not installed quite yet - does this have to be installed for them all to work together or something? HWiNFO is saying the audio is 'nVIDIA MCP67/68 - HDA controller' which I've looked for and been unable to find, but the consensus seems to be that the Conexant is working with this nvidia audio bus..

So I'll keep playing with it, and see what happens... still looking better than before.

Thanks for the earnest, albeit slightly misguided, help so far. :)

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

You might be right for the network card. The maintenance and service guide in the download section (for the dv2940se) is actually the one for the dv2500 and dv2700 (dunno why they put that one in there though - maybe most other parts match?)

I don't know much about HD audio. I've read during my google searches that HD audio may need additional software patches from Microsoft to work with XP (if my memory is correct - it's a bit fuzzy now)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 maybe?

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

Yeah, that's the hotfix I already applied just to get XP to start detecting the Conexant modem and 221 smartaudio... both on the HD audio bus. So I've actually since gotten the modem working - however, both have been through the device manager. This is usually OK (the modem and conexant audio *look* like they're OK) but I am thinking something in the actual installer app has some kind of codec that windows is still missing... there is no special 'hdaudio' codec listed, just regular audio codecs and the conexant actual device. Soo I'm looking around for an installer that works - so far have left me back at device manager. For whatever reason, this seems waaay more complicated than any hdaudio I've ever set up on another laptop with xp.. maybe soddy installer packs from conexant are to blame, who knows? I would also like to know how it relates to the Nvidia MCP67/68 audio that I can't seem to find anywhere - I downloaded a general installer for Nvidia nforce audio and it didn't seem to do anything..

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

OKAY, so, Sound is now working. Let the record state that if you try to install the Vista sound driver for this beastie you will have MANY PROBLEMS, the worst of which is that windows will say everything is hunky dory. The driver may match up and install, but apparently that doesn't mean Windows will work with it (different interfaces, dll's, relationships between system files..). If one of the folders in the extracted directory says 'XP32' you know you're on the right track.

Here's the DG link to the final one that worked -

Skip through the meadow of ads to find the carrot on the other side!

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

PS, Marvell did apparently make the chip for the nVidia ethernet, though the driver for Marvell did not go through while nVidia did - it's also listed as nVidia in device manager.

Also, the XP32 audio shows up as 'Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221' where the Vista32 was showing up as 'Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221' ... Little discerning thing that might be a giveaway for others going through this process with XP downgrades. It seems that it's only if you're trying to install 64-bit drivers on the 32-bit platform that it'll tell you there's a conflict with whatever platform you are using.

The remote seems to be working just fine - has functionality outside of quickplay and media center apparently - I was using the arrow keys to highlight desktop icons earlier... though obviously that's not the designed application, I know it works. I'm guessing the drivers were with the HP integrated bluetooth module or the HP quickset (which also works btw)..

I just finished off by burning the final collection of drivers (just over 600mb, an epic spread..) to a cd using the laptop.

Thanks again for the help, and anybody who wants more info about my process or who wants to talk to me about XP downgrades specifically is free to post on here or PM me..

PPS...

NOW this laptop is now so freaking zippy it's scary. Vista had it crunching like an anorexic banana slug. Coincidence?

Re: Putting XP on HP dv2940se media laptop!

Hey Kayani, I dunno where you got that the vista driver worked because it didn't in any case, they are actually worse because they will install OK without telling you they're on the wrong platform - 32 to 32. The final working chipset driver wasn't found from HP or the actual nvidia site even - I did a search for the 630M chipset for windows xp and came up with this one on driverguide -

http://members.driverguide.com/drive...iverid=1116288

- which should give you everything from graphics to lan.

Sound can be found here -
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...action=summary

But only after you install the MS universal audio codec if you don't already have sp3 -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111

Hope that helps, always good to see another trooper for the cause.. godspeed.
