Desktop background problem

When I go to "display properties/desktop" to change my wallpaper, my usual wallpapers aren't listed. Instead, EVERYTHING from "My Pictures" is listed there (a HUGE list!). I don't want any of these things to be desktop wallpaper.

When I go to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper, all of my old wallpapers are there. Nothing from "My Pictures" is in there.

How can I get my old wallpapers back in the list under "Display Properties"?

Hi cjchrist, and welcome to TSF.

This could be a sign of an infection, but try this.

Run the System File Checker:
Click Start >> Run >> Type sfc /scannow (note space after sfc), then click OK.
You may be asked to insert your Windows disc.

If when you insert your disc, it auto starts, close it down so that you can see the command window.

The process may take quite a while, be patient and wait until you see a new line which should say "C:\Documents and Settings\****>

(**** being your name or computer name.)

Take out the disc. Then reboot and let me know if this solved your problem.

I did as you suggested, but it didn't help. Any other ideas? This is just so weird.

Have you tried system restore?

What Antivirus/Spyware protection do you have installed?

Did you run any scans recently?

There's a key "wallpaperdir" under

KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

it should be pointed to "%SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper"

This entry is intact. It reads just as you say it should.

I have tried system restore, but the problem was still there. I have McAfee; I ran it and it didn't detect anything.

What sort of specs did you want me to post?

I have a related problem, in that I can no longer centre or tile the desktop back ground.

Well, yesterday the problem disappeared. All my wallpapers are now listed when I go to display properties. I have no idea what happened to change this back to the way it was. Thanks, everyone, for your help and advice. If you ever figure out what the problem might have been, I sure would like to know, in case it happens again.

cjchrist Registered User Join Date: Aug 2008 Posts: 7 OS: Windows XP	Desktop background problem When I go to "display properties/desktop" to change my wallpaper, my usual wallpapers aren't listed. Instead, EVERYTHING from "My Pictures" is listed there (a HUGE list!). I don't want any of these things to be desktop wallpaper. When I go to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper, all of my old wallpapers are there. Nothing from "My Pictures" is in there. How can I get my old wallpapers back in the list under "Display Properties"?

This could be a sign of an infection, but try this. Run the System File Checker: Click Start >> Run >> Type sfc /scannow (note space after sfc), then click OK. You may be asked to insert your Windows disc. If when you insert your disc, it auto starts, close it down so that you can see the command window. The process may take quite a while, be patient and wait until you see a new line which should say "C:\Documents and Settings\**> ( being your name or computer name.) Take out the disc. All my wallpapers are now listed when I go to display properties. I have no idea what happened to change this back to the way it was. Thanks, everyone, for your help and advice. If you ever figure out what the problem might have been, I sure would like to know, in case it happens again.
