OS: Windows XP

Blank screen on startup

I don't recall my operating system, I know it was XP I don't remember if it was home or not because its been such a long time since I used the computer,...but a long time ago I came home and turned on my computer and it just went black...as if the monitor wasnt hooked up. I have a feeling somebody did something because it worked totally fine before hand and nobody in this house fesses up to anything...but thats besides the point, anyway...before I go and format a harddrive and instal windows to try in the computer I was wondering if that sounds like anything anybody might just know what happened. I know a long time ago on another computer I had I was tweaking stuff out i think in CMOS and i did something a little bad and it did the same thing, but I know nobody would even attempt something like that on my computer...
if theirs anything you can think of off the bat, even if theirrs 10 different things please let me know..Id rather not pay some douchebag to fix my computer....
