Folders with TIFF images crash Explorer in XP
My computer's Explorer (HP Pavillion with 2.8ghz DC P4, 2 GB ram) has developed this strange habit of crashing whenever I access folders which contain four or so TIFF files.
I began a project archiving family photos and have scanned them in as TIFF files. Whenever I click to open one of the folders containing even a small number of the files, Explorer crashes. In addition, I have been using photoshop to import the scanned images. Whenever I save a file to one of these folders as a TIFF file, Photoshop and Explorer crash. Ususally, when the crash occurs, I lose all my desktop icons and they stay gone. I can move the mouse around but invariably have to do a hard shutdown to get the system running again. On the rare occasion the system recovers, I have found the processes from Photoshop still running, but cannot get the program accessible again without restarting. I have tried disabling shell extensions related to images, which worked for a while, but I had to reset all my extensions for another reason. So now I'm trying to resolve this problem or at least figure out what is causing this issue. one other thing, a couple weeks ago, the computer began trying to spontaneously re-install Microsoft picture gallery... which was never successful, so it simply gave up. I have a feeling this plays some bearing in the problem, but I can't find any references to this application anywhere. Any ideas? |

Re: Folders with TIFF images crash Explorer in XP
If memory serves, you need a third party software to read .tiff files.
I ran into this a few years ago. With some printers, they include the software to view .tiff files. You need to do a google for .tiff viewer, free. Only thing I can remember about that, but I do remember it was a issue with a friend of mine.
