[SOLVED] Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
My laptop (2006 Thinkpad) was recently infected with some very nasty viruses. I was advised to completely reinstall XP to resolve the problem. After the reinstallation, I loaded back Microsoft Office, Photoshop, etc. However, I can't get my internet connection to work.
My laptop was part of a network with three other computers. All four computers use wireless internet and are in close proximity to each other. After I reinstalled XP, I'm not able to see 'Wireless Network Connection' in my Network Connections. The only thing there is '1394 Connection'. My Thinkpad has an inbuilt wireless network adapter that has worked consistently for the last two years. I have no idea why I'm not able to connect to my network. Please help! PS: I'm using another computer to ask this question. Obviously, there is no internet access in my Thinkpad. I am also posting this in the 'Networking' sub-forum. Please forgive the repetition! Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
You need to install the drivers for the wireless card. Go to the IBM website and lookup you thinkpad model for these.

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
Can you please post your system specs? You can get all your system specs from a program called Everest.
A download link for Everest is available in my signature. Thanks, -Coolfreak |

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
It didn't work. :( I installed the applicable driver. In my 'Device Manager', under 'Network Adapters', the only thing there is the 1394 one. Even the Ethernet Adapter doesn't work, even though it's listed. The Wireless Adapter isn't even listed. Any suggestions?

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
Do you have anything under 'unknown devices'? are they're any yellow '!' marks in device manager? Also to state the obvious, is there a button physically on your laptop to switch on the wireless? If so, is it on>?

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
I had already installed these drivers. However, how do I get the laptop to use them? I'm a complete novice so please don't assume I know something, even if it's basic. :)
When I go to 'Add Hardware', what do I select? I had previously been selecting 'Intel(R) PRO/100+ MiniPCI' and 'Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4). Or am I not supposed to select anything at all but do it a different way? I'm very confused. After I select these, it says there's a 'code 10' error where the device can't start up. In the device manager, the things I select show up with the yellow '!' point on their left. Thank you for your help so far! What have I been doing wrong, and what should I do? Also, does the 'Infrared Port' have anything to do with wireless? Note: I skipped the internet connections part while installing XP. Could this have any effect on my wireless adapter? If so, should I reinstall XP again? Last edited by aarati93 : 07-23-2008 at 07:42 AM. |

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
I just discovered that my audio wasn't working as well. However, installing the drivers worked, and the problem is solved. I wonder how many of my drivers I don't have; I must have deleted them while reinstalling XP.

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
I noticed that there isn't a category for 'Display Adapter' in my 'Device Manager'. Does this mean that one of my 'unknown devices' is a Display Adapter? If so, which Display Adapter should I select when I update the driver?
The Everest report says that my Display Adapter is 'ATI Mobility Radeon X300 (M22)'. However, I can't find this in my list of drivers even though I installed the applicable one from the IBM website. Last edited by aarati93 : 07-23-2008 at 08:57 AM. |

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
Have you checked the CD's you got with the laptop? Usually they give you a resource CD or motherboard CD which includes all the drivers you need to install. When you re-install Windows, you do delete all the drivers.

Re: Reinstalled XP: Wireless Gone
Part of the problem is that I can't find the CD. It's very frustrating. I probably shouldn't have reinstalled XP without making sure I had all these in hand. Does the IBM website have all the drivers that are in the CD, or only a select few?
