Windows Restart Unexpectedly

Hi

I was recommended by Malware Removal after confirming Malware-free.

My Windows close with a quick blue screen showing a very blurry error message and restarted, especially when I am not connected to the WLAN.

This happened after the vendor had earlier mirror-installed the WinXp when I changed my HDD on the laptop. Thereafter, I restored my backup files.

I believe this could be due to a corrupted files or drivers in WinXP. I tried to do check disk options to fix file system errors & scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. But still same.

When contacted, the vendor had advised me to re-format the "C" drive and install the actual WinXP from my disk since their factory version may have cause the problem. But it is going to be a tough time to re-install many program and have bookmarked many URLs.

Is it the best way to resolve by formatting my "C" drive or is there other ways?

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

hello jacklim

Can you manage to use XP before it shuts down on you?

1. Turn off automatic rebooting
Right-click My Computer / Properties / Advanced / Startup and Recovery/Settings.
Under System Failure, uncheck the Automatically restart check box
You will then get a BSOD with error message which will help identify the problem.

Please post the message such as
STOP 0x00000000A IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
and any drivers named ( *****.sys)

2. Get your XP installation CD out

Start/Run and type in
sfc /scannow (there is a space before /)
OK

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

Windows re-started, I could only figured out from the blurry blue screen (after unchecking the Auto restart check box under system failure). It reads:

A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Driver IRQL not less or equal. If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If the screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new harware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer new updates you might need.

If problem continues, disable or remove any newly install hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options and then select safe mode.

Technical information:??????????

"sorry unable to read the rest as it appears garbled." - see attached file PICTURE #1.

Howvever, upon restarting windows & sending error message, received this message:

Problem caused by Device Driver
You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused Windows to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

It is hard to read that error message right enough.

Do you think it might say NTFS.sys??

Try this fix from MS. It won`t do any harm to try it

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

Did the followings:

1. Using recovery console, did R, at command prompt:
cd \windows\system32\drivers
ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old (replied: the system cannot find the file or directory specified.
at command prompt again:
copy D:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers (replied: Access is denied)
Unable to restart after typing QUIT so power off & was facing a little prob as the power off button didnt work initially.
After restart, Error Message: System32\drivers\NTFS.sys & windows was frozen
Failed again to restart even with power off button. Only succeeded after few tries. Nearly have to dismantle battery.

2. Tried repair Windows with CD-rom on boot, but Blue Screen with error message re-appear.

No Blue Screen shut down when the Internet is connected.

HOW?

Should I install new WIN XP in partition drive & format C later or I suspect could be MEMTEST issue. Can I run MEMTEST?

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

I think you should check the hard drive with chkdsk.
The "r" switch makes Windows try to repair any errors it finds

In the Recovery Console type
chkdsk /r (there is a space before /)
Enter

Re: Windows Restart Unexpectedly

I lost my paitent after doing chkdsk /r 3X & still the same problem.

In the end, I formatted the "C" drive and install WinXP from CD.

I dont experience any problem even the Internet LAN is not connected... at least for last more than 4 hours.

Thanks and I think I will juz leave my WinXP as it is now.
