My DVD/CD drive is messed up.
It recognizes cds and dvds to play. It will let me burn dvds and recognize blank dvds with no problems. When I put in a blank cd-r, it says "No Disc, " and will not let me burn a cd (using Roxio/Windows Media player/other apps). I have tried cds from 3 different memorex spindles, and cds from a fujifilm cd pack. I tried some of the same cds in my old computer and it burned the cd without complications. Any suggestions? It's only burning a cd, so I don't really want to go get a new drive. Please help! Last edited by DiLee : 07-18-2008 at 08:42 AM. Reason: adding information |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
I'm not sure how to determine if the driver has been installed....I'm also not sure cd came with it either.
My computer is a Dell & the dvd/cd burner is "gwa4164b" Apparently, a lot of people have had problems with them. I tried firmware updates to try to fix the problem, but it's still not fixed. Also, just to clarify the last statement in my original post "The cd burner is the only thing that does not work." Last edited by DiLee : 07-18-2008 at 07:39 PM. |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
In Device Manager, any yellow question marks on your CD drive?
Also, have you tried to uninstall the drive from Device Manager, then reboot, and let Windows automatically re-install the drive? |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
There are no yellow question marks that I can see. If I uninstall the drive, will it definitely re-install on reboot?
Also, I tried a blank imation cdrw, and it recognized and allowed me to burn it...could it just be the brand even though I've used memorex from these same spindles in my computer before, and the fujifilm worked in my old computer?? Last edited by DiLee : 07-18-2008 at 08:50 PM. Reason: more info |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
Here is a data page for this LG burner and it is Panasonic Chipped and also there are no firmware updates for it yet.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters/lg-gwa-4164b/1239 I would try Verbatim CD-R's in it they are a better brand of CD-R and just might work. Also some burners actually do not burn CD-R's at all and from what I have read the reports on this LG are not too good

Re: DVD/Cd burner
So I removed the upper and lower filters, then updated the firmware.
Drive E is inaccessible. I tried uninstalling the drive since drive E wasn't working, and rebooted. Drive E is inaccessible. Roxio says "No Drive" Drive E said the hardware was added and is showing up again in the device manager, but I cannot use drive E at all now. Please HELP! |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
Ok so I've played around with it some more...rebooted several times...tried to use system restore, but it wouldn't work. Tried updating the firmware again...re-installed Roxio, so the drive accessible again (including on Roxio).
I tried different cds again...Imation CDRW shows up. Non-blank cds (Roxio, Dell support cd, etc.) work in the drive. I inserted one of the Memorex cds that said "no disc" before, and it showed that it was a blank cd. I took it out and tried a different memorex cd (from a different spindle), but it did not recognize it. I put the same memorex cd it recgonized moments before back in, but it was not recognized any longer as blank. So it's back to where it was when I first posted this thread, but at least I can still use the drive. |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
I tried Ativa thinking it might be a better CD-R, but it also does not work....
I'm thinking there is no solution to get it to burn Cd-Rs since I have tried everything I can think of, as well as everything you can think of and my computer friends, so I should just get a new drive. What do you think? |

Re: DVD/Cd burner
So I think I know what might be the problem. When I opened iTunes a few minutes ago, this is the message I got:
Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD brunging software. Please reinstall iTunes. Then under diagnostics I got this message: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600) Dell Inc. Dell DV051 iTunes 7.7.0.43 QuickTime 7.5 CD Driver 2.0.7.3 CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1 Bonjour 1.0.4.12 (118.4) iTunes Serial Number Current user is an administrator. The current local date and time is 2008-07-27 01:25:32. iTunes is not running in safe mode. Video Display Information Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family **** External Plug-ins Information **** No external plug-ins installed. **** CD/DVD Drive Tests **** LowerFilters: PxHelp20 (2.0.0.0), DRVMCDB (1.0.0.1), DLACDBHM (1.0.0.1), No drivers in UpperFilters. Failed loading CD / DVD drives, error -43. Try doing a repair install on iTunes from the “Add or Remove Programs” control panel. so I repaired iTunes through the Add/Remove Programs like it said, and now it is recognizing my blank Fujifilm Cd-Rs, but not my Memorex or Ativa. Now it says: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600) Dell Inc.
