Sound Problem: Choppy Sound
Hello, for about a month or so I've been having some trouble with my sound. The sound is laggy or choppy occasionally. Note this doesn't happen randomly for no reason, it will most frequently occur when my computer is running something that requires a bit more CPU dedication then normal or when I have a few problems already open. For example, if I am running a large video file in Windows Media Player (20MB+) the video and sound will lag and become choppy for short burst periods. I noticed in the video I had of fireworks that it would occur went the fireworks would explode. Another occurance would be running my file sharing program (Ares) while having a few browser pages open, possibly loading a website or on Youtube watching a video. Also if I'm running a game like World of Warcraft and Alt+Tab to open a browser the sound will lag then aswell. You may say to not have all my programs open at once but I used to do this before and this sound problem was never an issue so I'm just looking for some help on this. Thanks.

Re: Sound Problem: Choppy Sound
Honestly you can only run the usual checks to diagnose what the problem is. First I would check Device Manager to see if there are any hardware conflicts, then I would ensure you have the latest drivers for you sound card/device.
Next you need to check if the sound becomes distorted only when your computer has to work hard. Background programs such as a virus scanner or disk defragmenter can slow down your computer enough to interfere with playing sounds so use Task Manager to end any programs that you did not start which are running to see if this solves the problem. If this is the case then it could be a lack of RAM which is causing the problem. I have a similar system to you and used to have a lot of problems before I upgraded my RAM. With what you are running I'd think you'd need about the same as me (2GB). Last edited by BingoMorris : 07-04-2008 at 06:10 PM. |

Re: Sound Problem: Choppy Sound
What if the sound card is built into the motherboard? How does it get tried on another computer?
Welcome to TSF.... How much system RAM is on the motherboard?

Re: Sound Problem: Choppy Sound
I was just going to point that out, it is in fact built into my motherboard.

Re: Sound Problem: Choppy Sound
OK I am blind I guess since I missed the RAM in you signature. So you got 2 Gb PC 3200 good RAM I just got a 1 Gb chip at Sam's yeterday for around $58.00.
Tryrunning Memtest for an hour or two just to get a good idea of how they are. Go here and download the Memtest Release and run it http://www.memtest86.com/ Tutorial: How to use Memtest http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html
