Re: problem with desktop display properties
I just took a look at your thread posted in the HJT forum. That didn't exactly follow the 5 steps. So go ahead and make a new thread, just disregard the other one.
Please, make sure you follow all the 5 steps exactly and post just what is relevant to what needs to be posted. Thanks ,-Coolfreak |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
try as I might, I cannot upload any of the logs because they have previously been uploaded to the forum. I tried changing the names, for example, Copy of ActiveScan.txt instead of ActiveScan.txt, but that is not fooling your upload. These are all in the last (second) posting I made on the thread.
Do you have any suggestions how I can upload all of these logs? Please advise. Thank you very much. |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Just went to the Hijack forum and tried again so I could see the exact wording for you. When I tried to upload ActiveScan.txt to a new thread, I got the message: ActiveScan.txt you have already attached this file in thread opaque titles...

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Alright, and you say if you changed the file name it still gives the same error?
I don't believe it can see actually inside the file, but what happens if you add just a word or a line or something in the file, to then make it a different file than the other one. You should be able to upload that one then. Good luck, -Coolfreak |

Re: opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always active
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've got both forums up and on my monitor. I tried uploading "copy of Active Scan.txt" same negative results, same message re the reason for failure to upload. Just tried ActiveScann.txt. Same negative results. b-ActiveScan.txt--same upload error note. results of Panda scan.txt--same upload error note. results of Panda.txt--same upload error note. Panda.txt--same upload error note. This does not make any sense at all! main.txt--same upload error note. DSS main.txt--same upload error note. Nope, no sense whatsoever. First line of Hijack This log is "Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2" Change to "Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2-aaa". Error note: invalid file. Second line of Hijack This Log is "Scan saved at 5:18:20 PM, on 7/8/2008" Change to "Scan saved at 5:18:21 PM, on 7/8/2008". Error note" invalid file. Okay, this makes no sense to me whatsoever. I sure hope you have an idea. or know someone you can ask. Please advise. |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Can you please link me to your original thread that you posted in the HJT forum? From there, I can get a mod to delete the thread, and then you can try to make a new thread with the files. Also, before you make a new thread, run all new scans and overwrite the old logs with the new ones.

Re: problem with desktop display properties
I'm not sure how to do what you are asking. Yesterday at 9:26 PM you noted that you took a look at the thread I posted in HJT. There is nothing secret about my threads. If I give you my password will that help you do what you need to do? If not, please tell me step-by-step what I need to do to accomplish what youa re asking. As far as running the scans again, that's no problem, but I'll wait to hear back from you, since the scans are all in the posting I did at 8:57 PM last night on the HJT forum.

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Sorry, I was a bit vague there. Disregard my last post actually, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I posted that.
Anyways, I see you did post all your logs in your original thread in the HJT forum, which is exactly what I wanted you to do. So thank you ![]() Now, we just have to wait, and let the expert analysts get around to it. If your post gets to around the 7th or 8th page, try to bump it, just to make sure the analysts see it. |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
When I say bumping, I just meant post again in the thread, making it go back to the first page of the forum.
Sorry for not clarifying that. Have a good night, -Coolfreak |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Hi Coolfreak,
![]() Well, I bumped up again, but do not hold out much hope for HJT addressing this. We'll see. In the meantime, I found a site called Annoyances.org--http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1012616687--that had some discussion about this problem. There were four things that supposedly worked for some people, but I don't understand them enough to know if by doing them I would be making problems worse or creating another problem. Perhaps you can look at these four options and let me know what you think: 1. " If you've ever used the Remote Desktop feature to access the computer with this issue, >then try this solution, it worked for me: >Go to the System control panel >Under the Hardware tab, open the Device Manager >Expand the Display Adapters >Disable the Microsoft SMS Mirror Driver >Restart > >You can re-enable this again after the restart if having it disabled bothers you." I don't know what Remote Desktop is to know if I've ever used it or not. If I try this, are there any bad things that could happen? ![]() 2. " to solve this issue... go to this registry key and set it to 0 > >HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer\ForceActiveDesktopOn" It scares me to make registry changes, but if this will work it's worth a try. But (a) I have no idea how to do this, or (b) if there will be anything bad that will happen if I do this. What do you think? ![]() 3. Someone else suggested the same registry key but said to set it to 1 instead of 0 ![]() 4. Someone noted a software named TweakXP that a few people said worked, but others said did not work.Do you know anything about this? ![]() Got to keep on trying! Thanks again for all of your help and advice. Maybe I have stumbled on an answer? ![]() |

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Just read all your posts. OMG :). Just out of interest what happens if you create a new account on the computer. I.e your account and your wife account then a new account. Does it give you default values to your desktop with out the annoyances. If so would it be a major hassle to create a new account for yourself and start from scratch. With the registry changes I two only play with it now and then just make sure you back it up and save it just in case some instability issues arise or you un check the wrong thing :).

Re: problem with desktop display properties
Actually, Big X might be on to something. If I remember correctly, you said your wife doesn't have this problem. So if you created a new account, could that maybe fix the problem?
As for the Remote Desktop, this is a feature that if you are away from your computer, you can use this to actually 'see' what the other computer sees and you can actually access the files. Since you don't know what it is, I doubt you used it ![]() For the registry, messing with the registry is a dangerous thing, but as long as you backup the registry first, you'll be good. To edit the registry, go to Start > Run > Type in regedit. I have heard about TweakXP, but never actually used it. You could try it, it couldn't really hurt anything. -Coolfreak |
