I have been trying to get my automatic updates to work but can't. Windows security says they are off but when I go into the control panel they are on. I did some research and tried to change it manually, but got an error 1058. Please help.
Thanks, Amy |

Re: Please help, error 1058
Hello Amy, Welcome to TSF!
![]() I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues... How to Repair the Windows Update Files. 1. Go Start > Run. 2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter. 3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK. 4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands: Hit Enter after each line REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL REGSVR32 ATL.DLL REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder: 1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter. Type the following command in the open panel. net stop WuAuServ (Please Note: the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.) 2. Go Start > Run > type in the box %windir% > Enter. 3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold. 4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type: net start WuAuServ Once that’s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates. Post back with the results. Kind Regards,

Re: Please help, error 1058
I went through all of that and the last time I went to "run" I got a message "The server cannot be started, either because itis disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it". I have tried to run Ad-aware and I keep getting an error as well.
Thanks, Amy |

Re: Please help, error 1058
Hi chauffeur2 and others,
I am having the same problem as Amy had last year. I have followed the steps detailed in the previous post. All is OK until I type the command net start WuAuServ into the the panel, when I get the response: The Audtomatic Update sevice is not started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521 When I type NET HELPMSG 3521 i still dont get anywhere! The response is : The *** service is not started. So that is my problem - I remain unable to activate automatic updates. Other symtoms that may help your diagnosis - both browsers (IE and FF) do not function normally on common websites (google and facebook) less common ones are fine, albeit slow. Thanks in hope, Will |

Re: Please help, error 1058
The reason it haven't start is cause you never started the application. You need to go to run services.msc click ok click on standard at the bottom of left hand screen double click on automatic updates properties go to startup type and click on automatic click apply than under service status click on start. than go back to run cmd and enter the other commands and everything should start or stop!! I found this to work after entering all of the other commands.
