Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

Even the helpers on the HijackThis forum werent able to find a solution. After going through a short process, we found out that I had some sort of virus in my System Restore registry. However, we did manage to get rid of it and my PC is completely clean now - many scans have returned results of no infections whatsoever. I told them that my SR was still not working (doesnt let me create a restore point) and they led me to the windows/Microsoft website where they had a step by step guide on resolving the issue. After doing it just as specified, I am still unable to create one. The member told me to bring this up here and see if anyone here has a solution. Please keep in mind I have already tried the step from Microsoft how it says to go into safe mode and flick a few options and delete a certain file and it did not work. The error message I keep getting is "Unable to create a restore point. Please restart your PC and run System Restore again". Of course, restarting does nothing. Anyone got any solution to this? I will be highly grateful. THANKS!

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

hello again ,

was this the steps that you was told to use

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, restart the computer. If the error still occurs, search the hard drive for the presence of the Wininit.ini file, and then rename it. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Restart your computer in Safe or DOS Mode.
2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
3. In the Named box, type wininit.ini.
4. In the Look in box, click Local hard drives, and then click Find Now.
5. Right-click the Wininit.ini file, click Rename, type wininit.xxx, and then click OK.
6. Close the Find Files window, and then run System Restore again.
7. If the previous steps do not resolve the problem, run the following command to repair the damaged portions of your registry:
scanreg /fix

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

No, that wasnt the method I tried. I tried another one. Should I try this one then?

Also, please note I dont have the Windows XP CD so any resolve issues involving this are pointless to me :(

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

Maybe I could just try that method above? Would you recommend it? Unless of course, there is some risk of corrupting my PC or something involved in it. Is there any such risk or is this just a simple and non-risky method?

There's a plethora of info on this subject here!

I've used this site many times for solutions to many problems in Windows XP.

Good Luck,

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

Ok I just tried that method and experienced a backstop straight away. Wininit does not exist on my PC, the search returned no results. I tried to run the scanreg fix in Run as well but it says it is not a valid path or whatever.

The only thing I have close to that is the Windows Genuine Advantage tool and the Motherboard disk for my system, but I doubt they are much help.

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!

That seems like just the program I need. However, is there one avaliable for Service Pack 2? That program specifically states it is for SP1 systems use, I however am running with SP2.
