Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Bump...Well, should I download that program or not? As I said earlier, it seems to be for SP1 users but I am running SP2.

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Ok this is getting scary now because apparently I just found out that I am not running a 'legal' version of Microsoft Windows as it seems. I want to start the validation proccess on that page but when I press the button I am told the product key found on my system is not from Microsoft and therefore I cannot do do the download update :(

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
I dont remember where it came from. My father bought it about 3-4 years ago and he only gave it to me a 5 months ago. I do however remember getting a destructable infection on it and I gave it to someone I know to fix it and he said that he also needed to reinstall windows on it for some reason, so he did just that. Im not judging, but he most likely did use an unofficial copy or something,

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Hello
Update here. Sorry about before. I am running a full legit version of Windows, I just learned a few days ago that it wasnt properly activated. I fixed the problem now, and my Windows is fully activated and genuine. I tried to therefore install the update you led me to, and it did download but while running the installation I got an error message saying the detected service back on my PC (SP2) does not match the installation for that software - as it is only for SP1 users. So do you have any other solutions or recommendations? Is that update download also available in an SP2 version? Please get back to me here. |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Hi,
I'm interested in this also. I did a restore to factory on my dad's pc and everything went fine. Have all the windows updates including SP2 and it's working great. Went to do a system restore prior to some driver updates and thats when I discovered... no system restore. I get the same error message and have tried all your suggestions you've mentioned here. No luck. His computer doesn't have an original CD either, just the rescue disk. He has Win XP Pro SP2. Any other suggestions and help would be great. Thanks |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Domiy, once a member of the security team says your log is clean, please try to turn system restore off on all drives : right-click my computer => properties => system restore => tick "turn off system restore on all drives". Restart the computer then turn it back on (untick the box).
Edit : note that this will erase all your previous restore points. If the problem is caused by a corrupted restore point or an inconsistency in the restore points then this may solve it. Is this a retail or an OEM (preinstalled) installation of Windows XP ? Do you have an XP SP2 CD ? Last edited by justpassingby; 04-13-2008 at 08:04 AM. |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
o! o! I JUST had a deal with this. My problem was a corrupt registry, but in fixing it, i manually created a restore point via registry. check this out:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us The part I'm talking about is where they boot into safe mode, go to c:\system volume information and (well, i can't access it from here unless i'm in safe mode, so you'll have to read the rest on the article). They basically create a registry restore point directly. Now, if you're JUST trying to make a restore point but NOT restore, don't do this. If you're trying to restore to a certain point, this is ideal for you. cd |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Well I would like to restore at some time I guess, because I never know when I may get a virus or infection, so its always good to have System Restore working, which it ISNT for me. The problem is that it pure and simply DOES NOT create a restore point for some reason. Perhaps the process you tried could help?
And no jpb, I dont have a WIndows XP cd, and I'm pretty sure my windows system is preinstalled. |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Domiy, if you don't have some kind of XP cd, at least something with the repair console in it, you cannot try the method I gave you. The reason why is by default you cannot copy files from the specified folder they gave you in the link, you must do this by recovery console only. good luck!
remember, however, if you do this, it's just like a complete system restore, and there is NO turning back. any info you have, back it up IF you do this, but let's see if there are some more direct answers to your problem first before we try this. cd |

Re: Unable to create a System Restore Point!!!
Have you tried turning system restore off then back on ? I really believe the problem is not with system restore itself but with a corrupt restore point since the antivirus deleted a file in the system restore folder. The way system restore works means that if there's a corrupt restore point, all subsequent restore points will fail to work.
Try that first, if that didn't help then go to start => run and type sfc /scannow. If it asks for an XP CD report here, else don't do anything while sfc is running. |
