Computer Shutting Down
Hi All,
I am having an issue with my computer what is happing it that quite frequently the system will show the dreaded blue screen but will not allow me the read it then shuts off. The only way I can start it again is to unplug it from the mains the plug it back in again. if I try to just start it all that happens is the the fan start and the hard drive read light comes on but doesn't go off along with the power on light but the initialisation process does not continue. I would appreciate any help the you could give me. A little about my spec Windows xp Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 512MB Ram Thank you |

Re: Computer Shutting Down
Have you recently installed a new driver, hardware device, or application? If so, it may be the problem. Also, to be able to read the blue screen, which may give more insight, follow these steps:
Go to system properties (Control Panel or right click My Computer, click Properties) Advanced Tab Under Startup and Recovery, Settings button Under System Failure, uncheck "Automatically Restart" checkbox This will prevent the auto reboot when you get the blue screen Last edited by andrew87 : 01-19-2008 at 05:13 PM. |

Re: Computer Shutting Down
Hi andrew87
Thank you for replying so quickly to answer your question I had installed a couple software applications but I was like you and thought it could have been one of them so I un installed them but it has happened again since then. I have not added any new hardware for about a year now so I didn't think it would any of them but I could be wrong maybe |

Re: Computer Shutting Down
Try the steps I listed to turn off auto restart and take down the information on the blue screen. We will go from there. If it is not a driver issue it could be a power issue.

Re: Computer Shutting Down
Hi andrew87
the problem has just occured again the message on the blue screen gives the usual drival about drivers and shutting down widows to protect my computer and theTechincal Information that is shown is a follows: ***STOP: 0x0000008E(0xC0000005, 0xBF817098, 0xB98A6848, 0x0000000) *** win32k.sys - Address BF817098 BASE At BF800000, DATESTAMP 45f013f6 I hope this information will be of some help as this problem is starting to really do my nut in. ![]() I was thinking it seems a though the numbers listed above are memory allocation areas do you think it could be a faulty memory module? Re: Computer Shutting Down
This stop error can be brought on by faulty memory. Download memtest86 onto a floopy disk and set the bios to boot from floppy first to run the program. If your 512mg of memory is one stick test it for 3-4 passes and report back. If it errs out quickly, try moving it to another ram slot and test again. Mike

Re: Computer Shutting Down
hi MJZZZ
Thank you for getting back to me I have been trying to run memory tests on both my memory module together as well as seperate but I am unable to even complete the test no matter how I try it do you have any other ideas? Another thing that came to mind is maybe a fault with my processor? what do you think? |

Re: Computer Shutting Down
This is also a possibility as all memtest failures are not memory related, but the test is somewhere to start a diagnostic process. Mike
