Well it all began when I was looking for a keygen.. I thought I had found it so I downloaded it and opened it to see the cmd prompt open.. I installed the new kaspersky shortly after and began a virus scan.. Before I knew it kaspersky had deleted ALOT of very important files that windows needs. Now it barely works, it will close out of installations, and the cpu fan seems to be going real fast. I tried the restore point but it didn't do any good. Can someone help me

Re: My computer is so messed up it isn't even funny..
Restore your PC to working order without reinstalling.
Click this link http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...this-log-help/ to go to a different section in the forum and look at the post "IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help" and then create a new thread in the hijack section. In future downloading keygens and other illegal software will cause major problems and personal data can be stolen from your PC.

Re: My computer is so messed up it isn't even funny..
I had the same issue (not from a keygen) but a trojan that royally screwed things up.
I spent days on spybots website doing troubleshooting with a security expert and doing scans and posting logs... what a waste of time. (it worked, but i could have fixed it within an hour and be back up and running doing it my own way) My advice- backup your data, re-install windows (Do not repair!) Completely re-format your hard drive and re-install windows. Before you do this- make sure you download all the drivers you'll need (if you can, or unless you have a CD that came with the computer) Also, make a list of the software you have installed, so you can go through and re-downlaod and install them quickly. After you re-install Windows start doing Windows updates. You'll probably need to restart, and go back several times, but make sure you get back up to date right away. After that get anti-virus installed. I like Avast, but to each their own. Others prefer AVG. Once you're up and running, don't search for keygens. Not only is it illegal, but you'll likely mess up your computer again. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out and what you did. Last edited by MattD313 : 01-18-2008 at 10:07 AM. |

Re: My computer is so messed up it isn't even funny..
My impression about keygens is that they are (most of the time) infected with some form of malware. Whether it's a virus, a backdoor or whatever -- it's there and doesn't always show up in the latest up to date antivirus programs. Sometimes it takes months for these problems to show up. I remember about 15 months ago cleaning a PC that had 12000 infections which I found when I removed the hard drive and checked it on my own System. I had already Backed up all files to a spare drive and went to work cleaning up and re-installing the non booting XP installation. It took me the best part of a month to get to the point that my tests showed there were no more infections.
I wouldn't have bothered normally but it was for a friend of one of my kids who needed the PC working again without losing whatever school work had been saved on it. At the end of the clean up and when I finally got the drive booting again I saved a copy of the disk & files to a section of my hard drive as a safety measure. I wanted backup in case something went wrong again. About 9 months, later during a routine virus scan, I got a warning on my computer about a file being infected within backed up files and I thought had been virus free. It just isn't worth compromising your PC for the few bucks that you might save by going illegal .. If you wrere to pay someone to clean your PC it will cost you a small fortune, if you do it yourself it will take a long time stopping you from getting on with other more important stuff and if you take the easy way out and format / reinstall OS plus all programs .. well every time I do that I lose a weekend .. MINIMUM BUY -- don't hack -- it's going to save you time & money in the end

Quote:
![]() I have every installer backed up on an external hard drive (for things like CCleaner, Spybot, Adaware, ObjectDock, OpenOffice, drivers, etc etc) and all my other software I obviously have hanged on to. That way if I ever need to re-install Windows- (recently switched from Vista to XP) I could just install and bam bam bam be done within a couple hours. Most of the time is just waiting for the OS to install in which you could just go watch TV and come back later. |

Re: My computer is so messed up it isn't even funny..
If I was to start off by just by loading up the latest ghost image of my drive I would probably take less than half an hour
![]() however when you're busy and no-one lets you get on in peace and quiet, forget it .. and everytime i feel the need to start over .. I start over .. But I am not talking about when I want to do my own system I am referring to systems that come in from friends and relatives with Virus, Malware, Correspondance and Photo's all over that main drive .. and so we have to try to SAVE what we can, making sure that we don't miss anything and that it's clean. Kill teh mbr in case there's something hiding there , nuke the drive then start installing Windows, Office and whatever other software that was on it ( you can get a list of installed programs by using "Installed Programs Printer" - Very handy ) Even if you do have everything backed up on to hard drive .. which I also do .. it's time consuming, plus also making sure that hardware updates are installed , windows updates are installed plus firewall & Antivirus even if they are free and to hand. Try doing that with the everyday hassle that goes on around you .. you're not talking about a couple of hours .. not if you're going to do it properly anyway. If it's just a question of loading XP and Office then you're laughing .. a couple of hours is ideal but who uses ONLY those programs .. and don't forget that after every program you should shut down & restart .. a great time waster. ![]()
