frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo
AMD Barton 3200+ 2.4ghz CPU ATI Radeon 9600XT Video card 1024MB Kingston Tech DDR RAM 160GB 7200rpm Western Digital Hard-drive Alright so the problem is that when I'm watching a movie it skips ahead in sound and video about a couple of seconds or so, but remain synchronized. This happens every couple of minutes. This happens with every media player that I have tried (including windows media player, winamp, nero showtime, realplayer, media player classic, divx player, and quicktime). It happens with all file formats. What I have done to try and resolve the issue is several reformats (not that I reformatted to try and fix the problem more than once, but it has persisted for over a year and I have reformatted at least twice), I've also replaced the video card and it still persists, and installing different codecs from different sources upon new reformats. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks. -Steve |

Try this:
Open the video (in whatever player) & pause it. Now, open the task manager & raise the player priority to HIGH. Resume playing. EDIT: Just noticed, we have almost identical PC's Mine is about 4 yrs old now, and i'd wager it's faster, as i have a separate HDD for SWAP ;)

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
I'll give that a try. I was an issue with the game Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines a while back where my mouse was having trouble responding, and it turned out that the game was taking priority over the mouse drivers; however this issue never presented itself when I played the game the first time when it came out. Why would this problem happen all of a sudden?
Yeah our computers are pretty much the same, but I'm not a fan of Maxtor drives, I've never had one that lasted longer than a year. But my WD has lasted a good 40,000+ hours of runtime, so I'm happy with it. -Steve |

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
Alright well I tried changing the priority of media player classic up to high, and then up to realtime but the problem is still there. I don't really think there is a need to test in other media players do you? Any other suggestions?
Thanks for the help by the way. It's more than I got anywhere else. Everyone that I have brought the issue to has been completely clueless after mentioning that I've already reformated and replaced the video card. And I don't really have any manufacturer that I can go to for support. |

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
Try installing FFDSHOW, this could also be a codec issue.
I vaguely remember having some problems ages ago, but solved them by installing the right codecs. You can also check what codec is used for what file & if it's installed properly with GSpot

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
I installed FFDSHOW. Which didn't do anything.
If it was a codec problem how could I fix it? I've reformatted probably 3 times since the issue began, with 3 different codec packages including one of the ones that I had previously installed with and worked when I installed it the first time. Last edited by bmass : 01-12-2008 at 12:18 PM. |

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
This is the final idea i have to check if it is or isn't a codec issue:
1-Get "GSpot" 2-Run it & check what codec was used for the video (open the file with it) 3-Enable that codec from FFDShow video codec config 4-Try the video in any player If it still doesn't work, we'll move on to graphics card drives etc.

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
How do I use Gspot to check the codec of an internet video?
I'm currently watching That 70's Show on a website that only uses the divxplayer so I assume it's using the divx codec. I have all of the divx codecs enabled in ffdshow but I'm still getting the skips. To test on a video I currently have on my computer: here is a screenshot of what gspot displayed (first attachment) and a screenshot of ffdshow with the xvid codec enabled (second attachment) And the video skipping still persists. :( As for all of the details about video cards and whatnot, when I was using the Radeon 9800SE, I tried with the unupdated drivers from the disc, the latest drivers from ATI and the second lastest off of omega drivers and the problem persisted with all of them. With the new video card, the 9600XT I was using the unupdated drivers from the disc and I've installed the latest drivers from ATI and the problem still persists. Thanks for all the help so far. Is there any more information I can provide? |

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
The website is www.joox.net, and www.stage6.com they have pretty much the same setup. However I only started using joox last week and this problem has been going on for a year or two. This problem is there in every video I watch on this computer though, internet or otherwise.

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
Hmm.. both sites tried to force-install DivX on me, which would be bad...
I'm pretty sure this is a case of ****** up codecs, propably due to a codec-pack install way back. (ace kodecks? or K-lite?) Something bad no matter what. Try to kill them through add/remove programs in windows. If that doesn't work... Get CodecSniper Just pray to god you don't kill anything usefull with it.

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
But how could the codecs have worked before and the same ones not work now?
In any case, I'm going to reformat in a day or two. When I do, what codec pack would you recommend installing? By the way, my divx and xvid codecs are the official ones from divx (installed with the divx professional for windows). |

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
Any codek pack is a bad one, and likely to be impossible to remove,
and if tried to remove, leaving traces that **** up all codecs after that. Just install: XviD AC3 http://www.codec-download.com/ If really needed: MKV pack (if you don't know what it is, leave it) EDIT: FFDSHOW is also a valid option, plays just about everything.

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
I'm reformating tomorrow, I'm just finishing off downloading my last torrent (I've been working on it for a few months and it will finally be done tomorrow) and then I'm reformating.
I had to replace my power supply today though, my computer started restarting again even before windows loaded. I was taking my PSU out to test another one and I noticed that the 32-prong cable connected to the mobo had about 8 prongs melted. So I got a new coolmaster 500W psu. |

Amazing your PC is still running!
And hopefully, you'll get a PSU that has STEADY voltage over price.

Re: frequent mini-skips in videos (I've tried everything I can think of)
That's the powere of a good old reliable Western Digital hard drive, also AMD cpus and ASUS motherboards.
Also work scheduled me 4 days in a row at 11-10 so I haven't had the chance to reformat just yet. Wednesday is my day off so I will have wait until then. Last edited by bmass : 01-21-2008 at 08:20 PM. |
