blue screen
I have a Dell Latitude D600 with windows xp pro sp2. Recently, i powered on and got a blue screen with error message "unmountable boot volume". I am now under the impression that i need a new hard drive. I have tried to run a download from dell (drivers/utilities i think) and i don't have cd that came with computer. i also don't have xp reinstall disc. anybody got any ideas or experience with this problem. is new hard drive my only option and any sources for inexpensive reload of windows and office?

Re: blue screen
I have no personal experience on this particular error, but similar ones, yes.
With any luck you might be able to "kickstart" your PC. 1)Check the IDE cable(s) in HD & MB. If that didn't work: 2)Tap the bottom of your HDD on the point where the cable connects with your fingers. Give it a few taps, use as much force as you like (hey, what have you gotta lose, right?) If that didn't work: 3)Manually slightly press down/up the cable & see if PC boots. If that didn't work: 4)Cry for mama, as i'm out of ideas.

Re: blue screen
Hi,
The file system is, most likely, damaged. Run chksdsk /r. To do that: Borrow a Windows XP disc (same version as the one you have). Start the computer with the Windows CD. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to select the repair option. You will have to enter the Administrator password - if none, just press <Enter>. At the command prompt - type chkdsk /r > press <Enter>. When the disk check is done: Type Exit > press <Enter>. Take the Windows disc out and reboot.
